Definitely good, but I can't agree with the assertion I've heard floating around that it's the best in the series. T&T's final case still blows everything else out of the water.
Overall, though? Very good. Apollo started out on the wrong foot in 4, but by the end I'm behind him all the way.
Speaking personally, I wanted more Maya and Phoenix. I hope we get a DLC someday where we have a big reunion - need to see the Butz! And Gumshoe!
I just finished Spirit of Justice! Here is my detailed review of the entire game:
Case 1
Didn't care for this one. It was a lot of backstory and explanation on Khu'rain, which I understand is necessary to set up the rest of the game, but it just felt so slow. I usually really like the introductory cases, but this one felt like it took way too long. "When are they going to get to the fireworks factory??" I cried.
Case 2
I absolutely loved this case. One of the top 5 in the entire series in my opinion. I love the chemistry between Apollo and Athena. I loved the amount of Trucy we got. The villain was so completely detestable while also being entertaining. The theme of magic is used so well here, and it was incredibly satisfying to figure out his magic trick and watch his freakout. I can't say enough good things about this case!
Case 3
MAYA!! Oh and now you're in jail. This was a really great case and I liked that it broke series conventions. The first case ending with a guilty verdict was really cool. The moment Maya explained the differences between the Steel Samurai theme and the Plumed Punisher theme, I was 1000% certain that it would come up in court. I also really loved how the spirit channeling was used in court. As best as I can remember, Maya and Pearl only ever summoned the spirits of other women, so it never looked quite so dramatic a transformation.
There are two things holding this case back, in my opinion. The first is that there's no villain to bring to justice. Not really, anyway. The head monk who tried to frame Maya is a very sympathetic character. Story-wise it makes sense and it pays off in case 5, but the case itself is less fun because of it. The second problem is that I wanted to spend more time with Maya. When I realized that Phoenix's assistant was going to be Rayfa - a 14 year old tsundere character - rather than Maya who was featured prominently in advertisements, my reaction was "Of course, because Japan." It was the same with the first Edgeworth game, in which I was looking forward to hanging out with Gumshoe the whole game. Who wants to hang out with an old man? Have a teenage girl! Who wants to hang out with an old woman? Have a teenage girl!!
I'm getting off-topic. I did enjoy Rayfa and I enjoyed case 3 too.
Case 4
This definitely has the feel of a standalone case. Man, that poor localization team. Rakugo, soba and udon all playing crucial roles in the case must have caused a bit of a headache. Anyway, I really liked this case. Having Blackquill as an assistant was great, as he's one of my favorite characters. Like others have mentioned, I wish Athena had had more of an opportunity to assert herself, but the lead characters (whether it's Phoenix, Apollo, Mia or Edgeworth) always seem to get crapped on by everyone; so it's not exactly inconsistent.
Anyway, I really liked the characters in this case, but once again ended up feeling sorry for the culprit. I don't want well-rounded villains with believable motives. I want cartoonish villains, dammit! Also, having a witness with dissociative identity disorder is such a goofy idea that I can't believe the series hasn't already used it.
Case 5
Wow. I really wasn't expecting this case to go where it did. Prior to this case, I was expecting Apollo's relationship with Sahdmadi and Khu'rain to feel contrived. But it ended up really working. I'm pretty sure that Dhurke set an unbeatable Ace Attorney world record for how quickly he moved from "who's this weirdo?" to "my new favorite character." It was almost instantaneous, and it usually takes me a long time to warm up to characters.
The moment in court when Apollo (and I) realized that Dhurke was dead was honestly one of the most emotional moments of the entire series. I can't remember ever doing this for any of the other games before, but I actually had to close my 3DS and take a moment to digest. It really affected me that much. (Phoenix has a similar moment in Trials and Tribulations, when he believes Maya is dead. But I knew the game was never going to do that, so it didn't have the same impact.)
As 999 demonstrated, having a character with prosopagnosia is always a great addition to a crazy mystery story.
One odd thing about this case is that it really could have been two cases. There's no reason for it to be counted as a single case, especially when Dual Destinies broke up Case 4 and 5 into separate cases. It doesn't really matter or anything. I just thought it was odd.
Once again, the relationship between Maya and Phoenix gets brushed off, but (to my great surprise) the relationship between Dhurke, Apollo and Sahdmadi was enough to carry this game to a very satisfying conclusion.
And if there's one thing this case truly delivers, it's a cartoonish super villain having a legendary freakout. Five stars!
Case DLC
God I love this series. That was the thought I kept coming back to during this case. At some point, a series becomes so good at fan service that I no longer have the ability to judge them fairly. This case utilizes so many great characters so well that I can't not love it. The judge, at the start of the trial, even suggests they all go out for drinks afterward. Really disappointed that scene never happened. The judge also needs an opportunity to let his hair down (figuratively)!
I really think the writer of this game had a book called "List of Psychological Disorders That are Useful in Fiction" and was just going down a list. 1. Dissociative identity disorder. 2. Prosopagnosia. 3. Unable to form new memories.
Anyway, I think this case was great. I wish it had been a little bit more complex, perhaps with a couple of different family members with possible motives. Even though puzzling out how the murder was accomplished was fun, it was a bit too predictable who the killer was.
Overall, Spirit of Justice was a wonderful addition to the series. I hope this series lasts forever.
It's kind of funny that the character dynamic I most wanted to see return was in the DLC case. But the rest of the game was good enough that they didn't feel like too much of an issue.
Hey, hey year old thread! Finally finished off Spirit of Justice today (I seem to have a habit of really stretching these games out by having weeks to months long breaks between cases).
A truly excellent entry to the series. I've been very happy to see the continued redemption of Apollo as a character but I hadn't imagined it would pay off this well.
I'm intrigued as to how some of the localisation of this went:
Particularly in regards to Kurain vs Kuh'rain and their relationship. I'm assuming that in Japan they weren't a country and a village in an entirely separate country that just happened to share a name as a whacky coincidence?
What's the popular opinion on the DLC? The extra case is a given but what's the deal with these Asinine Attorney bits? Are they just conversations to click through or what?

Funimation has put up on Amazon a pre-order for the english dub of part 1 of the Ace Attorney anime on blu-ray.
Aha, I was not expecting the auto-advancing story feature. Won't be using it, but it's an interesting idea for someone who just wants to watch the story unfold.
I had completely written off the Ace Attorney series at this point, so this is a wonderful surprise!
Is Ace Attorney Investigations 2 the only game not localized at this point? I watched a translated playthrough of that game ages ago and it seemed great.

The fan translation is aces. Highly recommend. It’s not even just good for a fan translation, it holds its own against the best of the series. The cases in it are really good!
There's a recent-ish HD mobile port for both Turnabout Prosecutors that never left Japan so, I'm not very confident on that ever coming over. There's a great community translation patch available though, and plenty of ways to emulate DS these days.
I had been holding off playing the last 3DS one released stateside, since I kind of figured it would be the last one I'd ever get to play. But I guess now it'll just be the last one I get to play on a 3D screen. That's one part I'll be sad to miss out on with this version. The diorama backdrops and action figure characters were really cool on the 3DS screen.
I recently replayed the first three games via the trilogy collection on Xbox. I was worried it'd would lose the charm of the original spritework, but the HD drawn artwork was a natural fit. It was my first time playing those games in a decade.
It does make me happy to hear about the "story mode" option in the upcoming collection. I had to reference a guide a fair number of times to make progress, both in trials and while investigating to move the story along.

Wow the first must've done well to warrant a sequel.

That felt like a real nothing case, though it was nice to see some characters again. I had almost completely forgotten about
I really didn't care for how Athena was handled, though.

Eat your hamburgers Soba Athena.
And then case 5 hits you with a Not-Japan suburb of LA with EXACTLY THE SAME NAME AS THE FOREIGN COUNTRY.
Anyone try the DLC yet? How's the asinine stuff?
....that really swung into Professor Layton levels of ludicrous scenarios fast.
Was fun. Appropriate that it's called Turnabout Time Traveler since the whole thing seems like a trip to the series' past, especially the cast.
... Though it'd be a bit silly if they took the route that they took for the DLC case where spirit channeling is, I think, never mentioned at all.

It's okay, but it's weirdly disconnected from the rest of the game. I think it would've made more sense if case 2 and case 4 had swapped places.
Yeah. After Game 5, that really didn't feel good at all.
