I think my video card might be dying. Starcraft 2 started crashing last night, so I upgraded to the latest drivers (258 or something). After that it just got worse. This morning, I started seeing artifacts just using firefox. Basically, red pixels started showing up and then it would get worse and worse until I got an Nvidia driver error from Windows which then resulted in the computer crashing. The error I was getting was, Display driver nvlddmkm stopped responding, but has succesfully recovered, and the screen would flash just before it occurred.
Sound like a dying video card? If so, any suggestions on what to pick up to replace it? I've got an 8800 gts right now. Are cards still all PCI-E so I can buy whatever? I'm probably looking to spend around $200 on a new card I'd say.
It is most likely your video card. However, they are notorious for crapping out when not getting enough power. You could try moving the power plug to a different rail on your power supply (if you can). Might be worth borrowing someone else's vid card to test things before you run out and buy.
Since you bumped this I'll post the conclusion. Bought a 768meg Gigabyte GTX 460. Seems to be running fine now. Haven't played Starcraft 2 yet but it'll probably be fine too. Thanks for the advice.
ATI Just released the 6800 series, at a sub-300$ price point, (So the same prices as the 460's) with better performance and features. If thats your thing.
