I just bought an xbox 360 tonight and I'm already experiencing difficulties.
When going through the set-up process for the console, everything works fine at first. I'm prompted for language, country, etc. When I get to the portion of the set-up where I'm given the option to create a Live profile or an offline profile, neither option works.
When I try to create a Live profile, it tells me that Live sign-up currently isn't available. I couldn't find anything about this on Microsoft's site, so I assume it's an issue with my wireless. This doesn't really matter, since I'm only at home for a few days before going back to the dorms, where my wireless should be fine. I'm content to create an offline profile for now.
BUT, when attempting to create an offline profile, nothing happens. I confirm whatever name I've chosen, a box pops up claiming to be "Creating Profile," and then I'm dumped right back to the select name screen. This happens whenever I attempt to create an offline profile, and changing the name from the default has no effect. This is also distinct from an invalid name, which has a separate error box.
I've restarted my xbox multiple times and nothing has changed, and I've searched fruitlessly for any information about other people encountering a similar error.

Alternatively, when you enter a profile name, it says it is creating it right? Then what happens exactly? It puts you back where you select a profile but that profile doesn't appear in the list?

are you doing that step by step?
edit edit: can you skip the profile creation? maybe try hitting the middle button on the controller and going to the dashboard.

After entering a profile name a box pops up saying that it is creating the profile, which promptly disappears dropping me back to the same screen where I type in a profile name. No profile is actually created as far as I can tell.
But after an hour on the phone with technical support, I was told that they have no idea what the problem is and that I should exchange it. Fucking Microsoft.
