Use hint coins freely, but of course you should try and figure it out for yourself first.
Also, even if you get the lowest possible number of picarats on every single puzzle, you'll still have enough picarats to unlock all the bonuses as long as you find and complete every puzzle.
Curious Village had a lot of really stupid puzzles (like the chair one) but the next two games were better, in my opinion.
I was joking jeez. I'm not sure if I got the chocolate code by myself or used a guide, since the hints weren't really helpful.
That image equation download puzzle with the handshake, handkerchief, dessert and some random image? Still haven't been able to solve it. That puzzle makes no sense!
Both of those were perfectly legit. The chocolate one was bullshit. The chair was somewhere between the two.
The difference of course being which ones I got and which ones I didn't. :P
As for cheating for full Picarats, really? What a waste of time. You're fooling no-one but yourself.
I actually really liked the garlic fumes one. Each game has a few puzzles like that where you really have to pay attention to everything presented to you. The chocolate bar however... there is no redeeming that puzzle. It's the only time I used a FAQ and I was angry when I found out how ridiculous the concept of the puzzle is.

Ok, my first puzzle: Typing a damn 'i' into the name entry system. After I conceded to not using my actual name, I'm enjoying the challenge so far.
You have to hit the lowercase button for it to recognize them.
Which is completely stupid, because the system can obviously tell the difference between upper and lower case. Why they force you to press a button for it is asinine.
Either way though, I absolutely love the handwriting detection in these games. It's the only one that has consistently worked without flaw for me. While whatever POS the DSi browser uses thinks my lowercase a's are really x's.

I...I got full picarats on the first game without cheating.
Then again one of my few forms of non woodsy entertainment during summer breaks for my first twelve years were puzzle books, so you could say I'd seen most of those before.
The worst puzzles are the ones that are so easy that you know your answer has to be wrong.
There's one in the second game where there are a line of trees (with different heights and different distances between them) and you have to choose the two trees that are the farthest apart from each other. So obviously the two trees on the ends would have the greatest distance between them BUT THAT CAN'T BE RIGHT IT'S TOO EASY

I did hit the lowercase button, it kept thinking I was doing 'l' no matter what length I did it, and when I tried to dot the i it kept thinking it was 'y'.
The handwriting system has been good besides that, but I don't see why they couldn't have added a keypad option.
On to Chapter 2 now, I have a feeling this game is going to make me feel equal parts smug and humiliated depending on how I do with these puzzles.

the upper/lowercase button doesn't really change what letter it "sees" as I use lowercase "a" for all of my a's and it works fine.
What you really have to do is either do a capital "I" with the care of a caligraphy master, or do a lowercase "i" by starting at the bottom and go up, putting in the dot within a millisecond of raising your stylus off the screen.

The worst puzzles in Layton are the ones that are based solely on luck to figure out
There was one really bad one kind of early on in the first game that made me so mad once I got it right
This thread makes me want to replay all the Layton games to do their puzzles while simultaneously playing all the AA games to Object at contradictions.
Seriously, I don't remember half of the puzzles you guys are mentioning so I need to replay it all, but I don't have the time! What are you trying to DO to me?

I planned to hold off on getting a 3DS for a while
Now I know I will only be able to wait until this game comes out
I keep wondering why they haven't made a Phoenix Wright anime series.
It would basically be a Case of the Week show, but man, it would be the best thing ever.
I also wonder if we'll ever get a dub for that Professor Layton movie.
Thing is, the PW games have always been quite low-budget. I mean, the production values improve with every game, but the core remains the same: 2 sets of animated sprites for each character (with 10-20 expressions for each over a few frames of animation), heavy re-use of characters and static locations, text-only dialogue and lots and lots of writing. I imagine the series does as well as it does because of a loyal fanbase and minimal production costs. An anime would require a much higher investment with the potential risk of not finding that expanded audience.
Layton on the other hand has enjoyed phenomenal success in both Japan and the UK, so I'd imagine a few stand-alone movies were a much easier sell. Which is a shame, because PW would indeed be well-suited to an episodic structure, even if the excellent localisation would be harer to do in this format.
Plus the people'd have to think up some crazy case twist every week. All series that have this sort of thing as their premise end up sucking before very long. (See: CSI.)
Blu-ray movies are region free unless the distributer doesn't want them to be (I think ones from Fox aren't), so there's a chance that this is. It's impossible to tell without someone testing it, though.

I was about to complain about a certain puzzle, but I think I just got it as I was typing this post.
Wait, it's dubbed and everything? Why the hell is the UK getting it, and NA is left in the dust?
Good thing PS3 is region-free. Does Amazon UK do free shipping to NA?

The PS3 is region free for games, not movies.
Looks like I'll have to this the ****** way.

That's...a new one. Perfect for enjoying the movie the go without any of that tiresome dialogue or animation.
