There's (finally) new info out regarding this game, courtesy of Famitsu:
Andriasang has translated some basic info regarding the stoy and gameplay:
Joining the shots, the site and its print counterpart reveal that Layton and Ace Attorney's Phoenix Wright meet in"Labyrinth City," a city in a different world. Wright hopes to challenge the city's "Witch Trials," which apparently follow some difficult to grasp rules. As for Layton, his role isn't clear at present.
One new gameplay system is the "Gunshuu Saiban" system. That translates to "Mob Judgement." Standard rules do not apply when the mob rules. Phoenix Wright will have to face off in questioning against crowds of witnesses.
Famitsu introduces new characters like Mahoney (in the above screens, the blond girl), the accused witch Phoenix Wright defends, and Jeeken (the red-haired guy with the sword), the prosecutor in the case.
Professor Layton VS Ace Attorney is due for 3DS release in 2012.
There's also a presentation at TGS this week, so I'm keeping my fingers crossed for a new trailer.

Ho shit! Phoenix in actual animated 3D! I assumed it would be going back to the sprites, but I can live with these polygonal versions. They still have much of the wacky design we've come to know and love from these games.
And Christ, the Prosecutor has a sword now? These guys keep getting more insane in each installment.
The Layton series is, bar none, my favorite DS series. It's just so fun and charming and has such beautiful art and great puzzles and was just so, so... perfect.
I've never played an AA game, but heard good things.
It's still a crapshoot as to whether this will come out in the west. Capcom doesn't seem too concerned about Ace Attorney over here, and while Level 5 allegedly has a localization team over here they don't seem to be doing much at the moment (the fourth Layton is being done by Nintendo).
Maybe Nintendo could pick up the ball again? Who knows.
Level-5 USA did have that localization poll a couple of months ago, which PLvsAA easily won. It obviously doesn't guarantee anything, but at least they're thinking of the game.
But I am actually so angry about Ace Attorney Investigations 2 not being localized in English that I am not certain I want to invest any further in the series, not even a spinoff. I know that sounds fanboyish or whatever, but I'm really, really annoyed.
Anyway, before that happens we'll have the 4th Layton game on the DS coming out. I do hope it'll be a bit more challenging than the third one and we'll have a bigger variety of puzzles.

Someday a fan translation patch will come. I'd be very surprised if it didn't. (Retro Game Challenge 2 is getting one, btw.)

After having seen the Prof Layton vs Phoenix Wright anime trailer, the Zelda competition anime and the pictures of the upcoming Kid Icarus animes I think that more Nintendo games need to be turned into animes.
Holy moley, that in-game footage is looking great. Glad to see they kept the ludicrous sound effects for the courtroom, as well as Phoenix's "oh, lord" face.
Oh my yes. I've got some catching up to do on both series, but this still can't come out soon enough.
Still need to grab Unwound Future before Last Specter hits. Also Capcom really needs to reprint Justice for All and Trials & Tribulations. I don't know how they think keeping a constant flow of Ace Attorney and Apollo Justice on the shelves but not the two inbetween is going to keep future sales up if people can't actually get into the series. I know there's Wiiware versions, but egh, just not the same.

I got past that one part, in the place.
Professor Layton is more dangerous than Batman and McGyver combined.
Phoenix is going to have to be in Layton's shadow for most of the game to be true to either series.
"Stupid super cool professor with his silk hat"
If Halloween was big in Australia, he would definatly be the costume I would use.

I no longer trust Capcom about anything. The fact that we're not getting Ace Attorney Investigations 2 is...ridiculous.
edit: I mean who is publishing this in Japan?
The ending of Unwound Future...
What a wonderful capper to the first trilogy. :^:

Guess I have to get a 3DS now.

I should be more positive. Maybe it'll both be localised and sell so well that it convinces Capcom to change their minds over Edgeworth 2!

Fire. Lots of fire.
Or, simpler, we just get Shepard and tell him that the Capcom offices are staffed by Batarians.
My iPhone just autofilled in the word "Batarians" for me. I'm scared that it knows that word,

I have Sega, Nintendo and Xbox games and systems for sale. Please help me buy diapers.
I just picked up that game recently to finish it, yeah that whole third act was amazing.
Only the most recent one.

Congratulations Capcom/L5.
You escape lots and lots of fire for now.
Now I guess I have to start saving for a 3DS.

Its being worked on by some folks over at Court Records. You'll need to sign up on the forums before seeing the thread however.

You'll need to snoop around a little to see where they're at, but it looks like the project is indeed active.
I don't envy anyone who tries to translate a game like Ace Attorney, where the entire game hinges on subtle word usage.

Perfect merging of the two games' musical themes.
