What is Formula D? Formula D is a board game based around Formula 1 racing.
The race consists of five teams of two racers who make their way through two laps on a twisting track at high speeds.
At it's most basic, Formula D is a "roll and move" sort of game, however, where things get interesting is that the range of the die you roll is determined by what gear you are in, from 1st to 6th, from a movement of 1 to a movement of up to 30.
"Well, why wouldn't you just keep it in 6th gear the whole time?" you ask? Because of one additional mechanic: to survive the corners, you have to "stop" (end your turn) a certain number of times within the red lines that denote the turn. If you don't, then you've "overshot" the turn, and your tires take damage. Overshoot too far, and spin out or even potentially crash, removing you from the race.
Each racer can build their own car, using a total of 20 points spread across 6 categories.
Tires, Brakes, Gearbox, Car Body, Engine, and Handling.
Tires can have a maximum of 14 points, whereas the other five categories max out at 7.
What do the different categories do?
Tires are what keep you on the road. You burn these by going too fast through turns, or by braking too hard.
Brakes allow you to well, brake. By burning brake points you can shorten your movement by a certain number of spaces. This allows you to take a turn safely, or avoid crashing into the group of racers in front of you.
The Gearbox is important in that it allows you more flexibility in your shifting. While all racers can only shift up one gear at a time, you can burn points from your Gearbox to shift down multiple, allowing you to control your speed in a hurry if you need to.
Your Car Body allows you to take hits from other cars if you race tightly. Getting hit, however, will leave some debris on the track.
Engine points keep your car running. These can be burned by down-shifting too hard, or by running in a high gear for long periods of time.
And lastly, Handling is how you deal with obstacles on the track. Whenever a car is eliminated, takes Car Body damage, or Engine damage, the location in which it happened becomes dangerous. Driving over a dangerous space reduces your Handling by one. Lose all your handling, and you're out of the race.
For the complete understanding of the game, the official rulebook can be downloaded
here. We'll be using the advanced rules for this game.
Also, Headless Hollow Rules Summary,
here.
Special Rules will include:
Redlining: You may spend 1 engine point to increase your movement by 1. This does not produce any debris, which losing an engine point usually would.
Two-Lap Race.
No Weather.
Everyone uses Hard Tires.
If two players would like to be on a team together, just say so. Otherwise, player's will be paired up randomly.
There will be both a winning player
and a winning team, so keep that in mind. Also, if all goes well with this game and people are interested, this could potentially turn into a league sort of thing, with points carrying forward.

I prefer taking turns by upshifting whenever possible.

Also also, here's a look at the track with all the arrows in the turns:
Oh yeah, total newbies are definitely accepted. I myself am a total newbie!
You're already on Blue Team, if you didn't notice. :P
I'll leave it open a bit more in the hopes we snare 2-3 more people.
colour me interested.
Dude you know we are going to own this shit, right?
BLUE TEAM IS IN EFFECT
Also, if you want a custom build on your car, go ahead and post it now.
Based on regular number of points from the basic Formula 1 cars, correct?
I'll be in the garage with a toolchest if anyone needs me.
Just need to coax a few more ponies out of her.
6 / 3 / 3 / 3 / 3 / 2
... I just realized that the only thing that could make this race cooler is swoop bikes and a Mos Eisley themed backdrop.
edit: but seriously, I'd like 7 tires, 4 brakes, 3 gearbox, 2 suspension, 2 body, and 2 engine
edit 2: electric buggaloo:
is there any software requisite for paricipating? dice rollers, or what?
Yup!
For this race, we'll do a good ol' fashion roll on Invisible Castle.
Put down FormulaPA as the campaign, and roll a d100. Higher is better.
Starting Position (1d100=73)
Did I roll a d100 here, or just a number between 100 and 100?
http://invisiblecastle.com/roller/search/716718/
You'll want to put 1d100 in the box that says "Dice", so yeah, you rolled a number between 100 and 100.
Can I switch teammates? :P
Well, at least I'm better than him.
ATTEMPT NUMBER THREE, WOO. (1d100=47)
That is really weird. But it's not a huge deal. As long as you keep it consistent, all of your rolls should at least be grouped with each other.
Okay, my car's starting stats:
Tires 6
Brakes 4
Gearbox 4
Car Body 2
Engine 2
Handling 2
Are we doing a d20 for a stall/perfect launch as well?
