The Guiding Principles and New Rules document is now in effect.
If you're looking to get into Mouse Guard, there are two hardcovers - Fall 1152 and Winter 1152 - and a third coming out I think next month, Legends of the Guard. The first two are part of the main plot and follow along with the main character Lieam, a young member of the Guard trying to find his place while being pulled in different directions by mentors with very different view points on how the Guard should execute their mission.
The Guard is responsible for many things in the Mouse Territories. They deliver the mail from settlement to settlement (very dangerous!), maintain the scent border that keeps the really big predators like wolves and bears out of the territories, and escort mice traveling in the wilds among many other responsibilities. They're civilized and are a combination of road warden from Warhammer Fantasy and Jedi.
The main enemies of the mice are the weasels. They're the only other civilized animals (other types of animals are sentient and can communicate but do not build or advance any culture persay like the mice and weasels do). The weasels have warred with the mice in the past and mostly live in tunnels as opposed to the mice settlements built around trees. There are no humans (or cats or rats actually) in the setting. There's also absolutely no magic either.
The RPG is basically a companion piece to the comic series and comes highly recommended to buy just for more information about the world of Mouse Guard as a whole. They just announced a new version of it that'll be released soon as a rather amazing looking boxset. This product will be much more RPG-y though and cost a bit more than the hardcover rule book.
I picked up the Hardcover of Fall 1152 and got hooked. Loved Winter even more. I am in the middle of reading Legends and have found the stories to be very hit or miss.
Are there any details (price, release date) for the RPG box set? I didn't pick up the hardcover and now can't find it sub $100.
I don't think there's a price yet for the boxset - officially anyway. There is this pre-order offer up at CCG Armory: http://www.ccgarmory.com/mogurogap.html but I would be shocked if that price is right. Then again, I've heard good things about CCG Armory, so they may honor their crazy low price even if it ends up being $50.00 at retail like Troll and Toad and other sites I've seen it up for.
Been so strained for cash this last year, I could barely get around to buying anything fun these days. But it's going to be much fun to finally get my copy, whenever it arrives.

That scene where the salty old mouse fights the crabs with a fish hook? Awesome.
Seriously, if anyone digs high fantasy, action, or political intrigue, read Mouse Guard.

Is it based off the Mouse Guard in Fables or something completely different?
err, probably different, cause they just rode mice I think, man been a while since I re-read my Fables.

David Peterson, the creator behind Mouse Guard has a really excellent blog: http://davidpetersen.blogspot.com/
We've talked about the RPG a bit at The Hopeless Gamer (my blog) which you can find here: http://thehopelessgamer.blogspot.com/search/label/Mouse%20Guard

I kinda like Mouse Guard if you can't tell.

It's been rather inspirational, especially Volume 2, Winter 1152.
This guard uses hares to get around when they need a ride.
Also, I've been working on a melody for the funeral song in the last chapter of Winter.

My singing needs a little work; I always get really nervous when recording myself. :?
