Car trouble... [solved]

This isn't really essential to the continued usage of the car, but it's definitely a comfort thing. My car has one of those little covers for the 12 volt outlet, and it's got a bit of a spring so it closes on it's own after you pull whatever it is out. I pulled out my car top light, and somehow a penny was on the inside of the cover; turns out it was the perfect diameter to slide straight to the bottom and cause a short (I think it was a short... sparks flew, but I didn't really smell anything). I got the thing out of there pretty quickly, but the damage is done and now it doesn't give juice. Any idea how much this would cost to fix for a '99 Jetta? It's kind of a low priority, but I have to drive a lot for a pizza company and I'd rather use the 12v cord rather than the one that hooks up straight to the battery.

Also, until I fix that, can anyone recommend an ipod adapter that works for a tape deck?

Check the fuse first. Most likely that blew first, saving the rest of your electrical system from shorting out.

Yep, fuse was blown. Totally forgot to check that. I'll replace it tomorrow, and if that doesn't work, I'll bump this.

As for the ipod thing, they sell these wired-tapes that you put into the radio and the cord sticks out and you hook your ipod up to it.

Walmart sells them for probably 11 bucks. They tend to break after a while due to the wires in the cord coming apart due to wear and tear. So it's good that they are cheap.

These are an excellent solution. I've had mine with no issues for over a year.

Instead of a tape deck, why not use a tiny radio transmitter?
Both of my parents have one for their iPods, so they don't have to listen to broadcast radio. You could also look into one of those.

Because if he has a tape deck anyway, it'll work a lot better than a transmitter.

Indeed, the radio apators are more expensive and you can get radio interference which leads to you fumbling to find a new station. I guess it depends where you live. My home (well, parents home) is south of philly and right near the Delaware and Maryland state lines and driving anywhere tends to make stations fade out/in and over lap.

At least with the ones I've used, the radio transmitters have even lower sound quality than the tape deck adapters too.

I like my transmitter because it also charges my ipod at the same time (and iPad too, in a pinch! I suppose you could play audio from it too if you wanted.)

Yea, I assume because of the almost direct connection.
Sad thing though is most cars lack tape players. And the ones that do sometimes don't like the lack of actual tape. My moms car will constantly try to rewind the tape 99% of the time you put it in her deck.

That looks pretty similar to the one my mom has, I'll look into that for when the MacAlly thing I'm using breaks.
