So I was thinking that I could maybe get a PA:AC fund going for us to have a forum collective subscription to the gnomon dvds, but they dont take paypal, which is unfortunate. Still, you all trusted me with a little money for the AC: DA group, so I wonder. I don't have a ton of money atm, but just to test the water, would anyone be interested in this?

Basically it'd be like, 10 people throw down 50 bucks, and we all get the account info and the full library of Gnomon for a year.

I don't want this post to be overlooked. I think this is a great idea. Right now, I don't have the money to put into it, but soon I will, when I get my next paycheck. Anyway, I think everyone should think about this. It would be super beneficial to all of us!

Oh, hey, yeah I'd be down for this later than sooner (when I have a little extra to toss at it).

Before doing this, however, have you looked into their TOS regarding such a collective? They may not say anything against it outright, but they may also have a policy in place regarding sharing accounts, or too many unique IPs logging in to one account, etc etc.

    Just something to ponder.

Well, If I have a few people into it, I will study the specifics harder. People at my school did this alot (I'm currently sharing a Lynda.com account.) I'll look into it on the gnomon side.

But mars, I plan to work on some textures actually, so I could be up for that. Have you looked through the AC: DA groups favorites? There are many there and most brushes are simply free to use http://pa-artistcorner.deviantart.com/favourites/?38652889

I wish I were more proficient (read: had any clue) in making my own. So as it were, I'll stick with standing on the shoulders of people who can.

It's really simple! I usually make a new document - a square of about 300-500 pixels, white background...and just experiment with different pictures or textures you find online...make them greyscale...whiten the space around the edges so the texture is just a circle in the middle...and open another document to test the brush and make any changes (like, if one part of the texture brush is too dark or too light or too bold, and makes the brush stroke too obvious with the repeating bit).

That's just for the textures that I plan on using with the "angle jitter", so the texture doesn't repeat.

It can also be fun to just make graphic shapes and see what happens...either with "angle jitter" on, or "angle jitter - direction" on, so it flows like a paintbrush.

Also playing with the spacing can be fun, or combining two brushes in the "dual brush" tab.

You can also do cool things if you make a black chain-link, upright...and fiddle with the spacing, and set it to "angle direction"....and you can make instant chains! Pretty cool.

But yeah...some people just come up with really great brushes. I need more variety...I have a handful of brushes I really like and have used over and over again, but it would be good to get some new ones in there too.

A website start-up. Hmm. That's a really good idea. Have you done that? What business did you use?
I have. At the time I used a hobby website--which was in no way intended to be a replacement or supplant any actual income--and described it as a "joint-effort that ultimately fell through but taught me a great deal about managing a process and working on a team with others."

    When do I start?
    I say carmel.

I say "Golden-brown blocks of torment that pull the fillings out of teeth like light lost to a black hole and should be prejudiced with the highest degree of severity."

I had bad teeth as a kid. I would say that I lost a majority of my baby teeth to these:

Holy Cats, ND! Thanks for the info dump--that one small post alone is a good starting point. I think I'll probably set up an FTP on my site in the coming weeks and put stuff up there that I make.

Likewise, 'Rook. I didn't realize the PA:DA thing was more that just people's work represented, thanks.

In other news, I'm feeling a bit better about the whole...art career thing. A professor of mine was a colorist at Marvel for 13 years, and she's helping me with my resume and coverletter for an internship there. I've always been nervous about those two things, and how to write them, so I'm overjoyed about her helping me out!

Well, It looks like they have multi-user licencing for over ten people for studios and schools. There are "no restrictions for normal use" On the regular account. So unless all 10 of us were logged in all the time, I dont think this would be an issue. Its the same with the lynda account I use, which is a normal account and that is split among about 15 people.

On monday, I'll call them, and see what would be the best option.

In my defense though, I would have made it back in time if it were just me, but having to coordinate with 5 other people in the morning to adhere to a decent schedule for hitting the road is a fool's errand.

I had a good time; really needed to get out of the city like that.

Went and saw Social Network yesterday, it was pretty good, a thousand times better than the movie they advertised in the trailer. Strip out the naff pop culture of facebook and it's a Machiavellian character study with a history that most people (nerds) will relate too. It's almost like a soft-core version of There Will Be Blood, without any actual murders, and online members instead of barrels of oil. Though Timberlake was a little too cool to be playing Sean Parker.
