So what do you call these things? I'm looking for a more specific title or connotation than, "cowboy hat" or, "austrailian cowboy hat." In fact I do not even know that they are austrailian but that website lists all the hats that look like those in their "down under" collection.

Another example of what I'm looking for is the hats worn by rangers in Fallout New Vegas. I can't get any screenshots of them at the moment though. It appears to be a cowboy hat with the side-bills curled up and leather band around the top.

edit: wow those pics are really big, my apologies if I broke your Hscroll

as far as I can tell, they're called Bush hats, Outback hats or, indeed, Australian Cowboy hats

there's a lot of different names after that, but they all appear to be manufacturer-specific

A lot of them are very pliable and bendable, allowing for the bends in the brim

The most famous brand of Australian cowboy-ish hats is Akubra, which is what they're generally referred to as locally in my experience.

Yeah, finding an Akubra stockist is definitely a good idea if you're after a hat, though they're more of an everyday hat than the over-the-top style that you've got in the OP.

Akubra hats tend to be rabbit felt rather than what you've got as well - they look more like cowhide.

There's not a lot of consistency in hat naming - most hatters name their hats after celebrities, movies and other things that reflect the hat style. Just browse around specifically for leather hats - most hats are felt, leather should narrow it down to hats similar to what you're after.

I'm not looking for a hat for myself I just need to know what I would call one of these hats if I was trying to write a clear accurate description of it. Bushhat or Bush-walker hat makes sense to me. I'm afraid no one will know what an Akubra is.

An australian will know what an akubra is :p

If you said "bushwalker hat" to me, I would assume you meant something lightweight, probably cotton, with a drawstring. I wouldn't picture that hat at all.

Stetson hats are american made and I presumed hats that I'm looking at came from austrailia. If I GIS either Akubra or Stetson I don't get pictures of hats I'm looking for so I'm at a loss for what to call these things. Maybe just a cowboy hat with a curled brim.

edit: Doc you may be headed in the right direction actually. According to Wiki Akubra won the license to produce Stetson hats in Australia.

If youre looking for the type of hats used in Fallout New Vegas, on the rangers, then he is not wrong, they are stetsons, or "Cowboy Hats". If you want people to picture those hats, just say "Cowboy Hats". 99.999999% of people will know what youre talking about, the other 0.000001% will not know how to read anyway.

As I said, you're not going to get it by a style name - style and brand are all mixed up together.

People are talking Akubra and Stenson, because if you want a hat that's going to last, those are the companies that know who to make them. They do make more conservative hats than what you're after though, so:

    http://www.google.com.au/search?q=leather+cowboy+hat

Has a bunch of options, including:

    http://www.australianhats.com.au/australian-hats-buffalo-leather-hats-c-28_69.html

    http://www.killerhats.com/coandweleha3.html

Actually... wait a second. Your original images are from a hat store:

If you're balking because the price of those hats is in the $80 range, welcome to the world of hats - you're probably not going to find it much cheaper without heading into crazy low quality land (ie, if it's not for a costume party, don't bother).

Even if you were to find a name for these hats, at this point do you think the name would mean anything to your readers if you had to do this much research to find a "correct" term for these hats?

I think your real problem here is that nobody in Australia wears hats like that, so trying to find an Australian name for them isn't going to work :) If you do a GIS for australian farmers, you will see that they all wear Akubra style hats. What you're looking for is American names for what they percieve to be Australian stereotype hats, and they have already been provided.

Australian farmers either wear the branded baseball cap style hat they got given from the last field equipment store they bought a tractor from, or the hat on this page, about a third of the way down, called the Cattleman.

Actual Stockmen, the guy that would be referred to as cowboys in the U.S., wear a hat called the Stockman. Near the bottom of the page. It looks very similar to the Cattleman, but with a slightly narrower standard brim, as opposed to the Cattlemans bound brim.

See, the wider bound brim of the Cattleman catches more wind, and won't flex with the breeze, causing wind to pull the hat off your head. If you're on horseback, that's a huge pain in the arse. The smaller brim on the Stockman doesn't catch as much wind, and flaps harmlessly in the breeze before springing back to it's original shape.

You're going to need some boots to go with the hat, by the way...

R.M. Williams Gardener boot. Will outlast you.

Guys I do not want a hat for myself. Especially not a cowboy hat.

I was hoping the style of hats I put in the OP had a connotation or a nickname but it appears they don't. The hat is for a character and its one of his traits so when I mention the hat I want people to think of the pictures in the OP without having to get overly descriptive.

Right now I'm leaning on, "cowboy hat with the brim curled at the sides." It doesn't exactly do it for me, but one description should be enough and then if I just mention "cowboy hat" I think people will get the idea.

Describing it as a leather cowboy hat (or cowhide, buffalohide or similar) rather than just generically "cowboy hat" will give more of the connotation that you're after.
