The Guiding Principles and New Rules document is now in effect.
Somehow, on my Newspaper's layout PC, I managed to turn off the smart guides. You know those little green tool tips that help you line things up and let you know when gaps and such are all equal and all that.
Yeah, seems like I have lost that functionality somehow and don't know if it was just some accidental keyboard shortcut I did but I'd really, really, really like to have those back.
We use Windows XP (well, the school does) and in keeping up with the out of date software, we use InDesign CS4. Anyhow, any ideas?
Its under View -> Grids and Guides -> Toggle Smart Guides. I think the keyboard shortcut is ctrl-U or alt-U, but i cant remember.
Also, CS4 isnt out of date... man wait until you get into the real world and you run into companies still running Illustrator 10 and Photoshop 6 as part of their workflow...
*edit* oh and if you disabled them completely (or someone else on that machine did), you can toggle them back on in preferences, under Guides and Pasteboard.
Thanks much, bud. By the way, I have CS5 at home and am planning to take my work with me to work on my super computer.
Trouble is, when I save things in CS5, the little icon turns to a CS5 Indesign logo and isn't compatible with CS4. Is there a compatibility save option that I am missing here? I would really like to know/use it. :<

Don't know if you've figured this out yet, but you should be able to downsave to CS4. In InDesign CS4, you can export the CS4 document as an InDesign CS3 Interchange (INX). You should be able to do a similar process in CS5.
Yeah, all adobe products have the option to backsave in the Save-as menu. Either in the drop down for filetype selection, or in the options page after you select the file name. You will either be able to pick the direct version you want to work with, or there will be an option like "Increase compatibility with older versions".
