My car is finally paid off and I no longer need maximum coverage. I'm looking to shop around to get the best price on insurance for two cars and my home. I hear Progressive is really good. Any suggestions on what company I can give my hard-earned money to and never have it benefit me in any way whatsoever?
I use local companies. If you do go big company route like that (probably better deals) be careful because they may drop you if you ever get into an accident.

Progressive is amazing.
I've used local companies, Geico, and switched to Progressive when I got married (my wife had it)
We have a local rep and office that we go through directly, so we never have to deal with 800 numbers or websites.
They're priced great. Two cars with FULL coverage and renters insurance runs us $160 a month.

I just switched to progressive from geico and saved so much money. on my car and motorcycle
edit:
wow i sound just like the commercial. i swear i don't work for them.
My friends have found that you can get Geico and Progressive to battle it out with each other. First switch saves a ton of money, each switch after that still saves like $20-$30 every 6 months for at least a couple of switches.
back to the OP, I use Progressive. They are consistently the cheapest for me, aside from current Geico quotes. The one time I have needed them, they treated me well. I was hit in a parking lot while parked by an uninsured motorist who gave me fake information. They had my car fixed in under a week, paid for a rental car, and I paid no deductible.
It'd be worth your while to request quotes from multiple providers as each has different ways of assessing risk and determining your rates. Often the rates between different vendors varies wildly (like Geico/Progressive quote for same level of protection was 2-3X more than my current rates last time I checked, I actually laughed at the agents when they gave me the quote).
State Farm has consistently been cheaper for me whenever I shop around rates so I've stuck with them. It could be because I took up with them years ago when I left my father's policy (also state farm) and used the same agent.
Progressive seems to take care of its claims really well. I've been hit by a Progressive customer and that claims process was by far the least painful for me. I didn't know Progressive was particularly affordable as others seem to be able to attest to, they stand out to me mainly in that they'll insure pretty much anyone (e.g. drivers who have multiple DUIs or terrible driving records).

I'll be the lone voice of dissent against progressive. I used them for my car and when it got broken into they were impossible to deal with. It took six hours for them to get back to me about my claim, and then after having waited all this time told me my deductible was too high to even cover the cost of fixing the damage (1k deductible because I used to have serious insurance issues), but wanted to take my car in for an assessment which would have had me carless for up to a week for a busted window and stolen stereo, and they couldn't even do that until the following day (this was on a tuesday in august so its not like it was some holiday or something).
What really pissed me off is the lady said I could have gotten the car in to the place that day if I had called earlier, when I had called at 6 fucking am when I noticed the damage and it was them who didn't get back to me.

I would like some money because these are artisanal nuggets of wisdom philistine.
Same. I've had nothing but positive experiences with them. I swear by these guys.
Thirded. I have full coverage for my brand new car and renters insurance with them. I also totaled a car last year with them and they gave me more than I expected for the car and my rates didn't go up.

I had this same experience, actually. About 8 years ago I totaled my new car. They actually paid out enough to cover the car loan plus another $6k I put toward my next car, and I had the check within a week. My rates barely budged, and I haven't so much as entertained the idea of going with another company since. When the woman in the other car decided 9 months later that she had whiplash, they called me to let me know about the action but took care of everything. Plus, their rates are actually pretty good... better for us than State Farm or any of the other big names we can get locally. Now we have our home insurance through them as well.
While they're the cheapest for my husband and I, we would have gone with them even if they weren't because they're so easy to work with.

Fourthed, while I owned a car I had it with them and had my car stolen, they were really good about getting me the check for the replacement. Now that I don't own a car we get our renter's insurance through them and they were fine to deal with, even when we got hit by lightning and had to explain all the electronics we lost to them.
I have state farm for my cars and house, and they treat me fucking awesome.
My agent called me out of the blue one day and told me she found a credit union that would refinance my car for a cheaper rate and cut my payment. That same credit union eventually financed my mortgage. My insurance agent was a champ after I bought my house and sorted out a lot of stupid bullshit for me over a screw up between the insurance policy and escrow payments. Then she showed up at my house one day with a video camera and helped me make a quick video of my house and contents so if I ever had to make a catastrophic claim in the future, little things like the intricate wood trim and origional hardwoods would be sure to be included in any valuation of my property.
I can't see getting that with Geico/Progressive. I'm sure they're fine companies, but having a local agent is pretty awesome, especially once you've been with them for a decade or more.

Is Amica good? I've never heard of them. I have Allstate, and after getting a good screwing when a girl turned into me going through a yellow light, I've been looking to switch.

This is the first time I can say I really liked my insurance company. I hope they're in GA because I'd hate to lose them when we move. They're that good.
I've had State Farm for car, life and renter's insurance in DC, VA, MD, CT and now WA and been incredibly happy with them on all counts.
For example, I recently relocated from CT to WA, sold my car before leaving the east coast and bought one the day I arrived in WA. All I had to do to set up my new car insurance was call my CT agent (Elaine, love that lady) and give her the VIN number. Ten minutes later, new insurance policy and temp cards were faxed to the dealership.
My new agent here in WA has been just as awesome, setting up renter's insurance over the phone for not one but two apartments without even batting an eyelash.
Will have State Farm as long as I live where they have coverage

I highly recommend Amica - a lot of friends and family I know use them and they have always been focused on high quality insurance whereas the Geicos and Progressives of the world tend to drop you when you need them the most. Progressive dropped my parents when someone hit them going through a red light (hah, weird) and while Geico is cheap, a friend of mine has complained about them before.
Seriously - amica is where it's at. They have a couple sites you can check out...one is their testimonial centric page: http://www.amicaconnections.com/ and the other is just amica.com. You probably haven't heard of them because they are a smaller company in general, but it's a mutual company (aka every customer has a share in the company).
Also - I should mention that they have earned the highest customer satisfaction rating among national auto insurers 11 years in a row.
Under no circumstances should you go with Allstate or AAA.
If you are eligible for it, USAA is a total no-brainer; they will beat out every single other insurer as far as value for your money goes (they're relatively cheap, though not the cheapest, however if you ever have to use them, you will be so happy you have them).

Damn, beat me to it by *that* much! USAA, never had an issue.

Seconding no-Allstate. They are legendary around here for dropping people as soon as they make a claim.
I'll caution that Farmers and State Farm's quality of service depends largely on your local agent.
Each local agent is pretty much the ruler of their own little insurance kingdom, with lots of authority to bend and break rules. They run the gamut from hardworking go getters to unethical con artists.
Something of a dice roll unless you get good reviews for a particular agent from someone you trust.
I worked for a company that handled collections for Farmers. The agents I dealt with were the biggest fucking idiots. They constantly lost shit and caused us tons of headaches as my company did not like finding out that we had accounts that never should have gone to collections.

USAA, best company I've ever worked with. They do all kinds of insurance, banking, etc - best part: they're non profit, so their rates are amazing.
The downside: Its military only. They've been expanding lately, but I'm not sure if they're letting everyone in just yet. My father was an officer, so he and his family was let in. It used to be that only immediate family members were allowed in, but now its looking like my sister is able to get the coverage for her family too, and none of them have ever been in the military.
So I'm not sure what the guidelines are for admittance, but USAA is definitely worth checking out.
I've found it much more useful to talk to coworkers about auto insurance than online people, only because local and regional companies often turn out to be cheaper than national companies in many urban areas. For example, I'd say half of my office have insurance through Erie, which serves roughly MD, PA, and NY. But they don't really advertise and I'd never heard of them before.
My auto insurance is through Penn National who are also very reasonable, but they only serve 9 states (same region).

They're not non-profit. Their Education Foundation is probably what you're thinking about.
Also, they're getting more and more lax as you pointed out. Even some *GASP* Contractors are being allowed in now. Scary!

If you don't have AAA, get AAA them talk to them.

They spend no money on advertising and they only accept good drivers, so they're able to keep their prices super low.
When I sold insurance for AAA we could never even come close to their prices, period.
Looks like you have to live in Canada, Oregon, or California to get them.
