I just bought a 360 and it plays games great on my Samsung LN-S2338W TFT LCD Television.

However for some reason it will not play movies. Or it will but it wont. I can put the dvd in the player, then my screen goes blank and says it cannot access the component. So i take my 360 remote (generic Microsoft brand one) and click title menu. It instantly goes to the title. I can mess around on the title and other menus, but when i try to re-enter the movie the screen goes blank again.

Another thing i noticed is that the sound for the dvd comes in and out every 20 seconds or so, but only for a fraction of a second.

So what gives?

Any help would be appreciated, like i said i love it so far for the games, but the lack of dvd playing kinda ticks me off.

First I've heard of that one. Not that that helps much, but it tells you it's not a common "oh that happens to everyone, it's just the way it works, get used to it" situation. Can you return/exchange it? (keep your hard drive)

edit: I assume so, but have you tried different dvds?

yeah i have tried differnt dvds, are you sure its a 360 problem?

i sent them the same message via tech support but i havnt heard back yet...

so can i just return it to circuit city for a new one? (it hasnt been 30 days)... or do i have to send away to MS and wait weeks?

Are you hooked up to Live? I had a similar problem (ish, I had picture but no sound) before I got my 360 online, once it updated it played back just fine.

Try jamming an ethernet cable into and see what that does once you upgrade the dashboard. But if it doesn't just take it back to circut city and get a new one, not really worth messing around with it trying to get it to work.

so i plugged in my 360 to the net. it updated something when i just tried to connect it. but that is all it updated.

i still have the dvd problem. is there any way to check to see if i am completely updated hardware wise? or do i have to be in live to do that (i havnt signed up yet)?

I'm pretty sure just connecting your 360 to the internet/Live will fully update it, no matter your actual Live status.

From what I've read in the hdtv thread, the 360 will not upscale dvd's with the component cables. It will only upscale via the vga cable. In your case, you can see the menus because they are set to a lower resolution, but not the movie itself.

The 360 can only do 1080p over VGA or something, that's why I suggested it for the 360.
Also if you use the 360 for watching standard dvds then the 360 will only upscale them through the VGA port thingie.

What about the HDDVD add-on? Does that upscale them? And would it run through the VGA, or HDMI?

The HDDVD add-on just gets the information off of the disc in it; it does no scaling, that is all done in the 360. So, it's the same thing playing a DVD in the HDDVD add-on; the DVD will only be upscaled if the 360 is connected via a VGA cable.

MS isn't allowed to upscale DVDs over component. No one is, according to the DVD Forum (formerly Consortium) - the trade group that controls official DVD licensing, ie the DVD logo and standardized format.

The DVD Forum declared no licensee can upscale DVDs over analog connections - component, composite, etc. However, since this was aimed at standalone players, they didn't even think to include VGA, even though it's analog. After all, how many DVD players have a VGA connection? So MS has a loophole to upscale over VGA but not component.

AHA!!!!! I knew it wasnt just my tv, lol. I have the same exact tv. Same issue. Itl play some movies at 480p, others will just go black and nothing but sound. Even if you switch the selector on the back of the console dongle thing to SD its funky, shakey picture. As of now I know no fix except to use another dvd player. In case youre wondering if thise problem translates into any other function it does not.

BTW, were not talking about upscaling anything getting them to play at 480p doesnt work, I dont know if the problem persists over vga at any resolution. Shouldnt, but then again this shouldnt be happening either.
