I was in class today, and this bird saw I had an iPhone and went on some rant about how I should jailbreak my iphone4 and how much better it is etc. I didn't really understand what she was on about, but she mentioned a program called "green p0ison".
I'll check it out when I get home, but I'm just curios if this jail breaking thing is popular or frowned upon by the general iPhone community? I've never heard of it before.
Is this something you guys would recommend or avoid like the plague?
I'm running windows on my computer, and using the iPhone 4 version 4.1 I that's of any help.
It's... alright. There's a few things you can do that are cool, and a whole separate app store through Cydia with some neat things in it, but no quality control on the apps that go in there. I had a jailbroken 3G and I'm not going to jailbreak my new iPhone.
It's definitely not "much better". Arguably better, in some ways.
I don't know much about these things but I believe jailbreaking voids your warranty? If you care about that sort of thing. It's not illegal but Apple itself frowns upon it. I don't know about the "community."
The real question is, does jailbreaking offer you any features you actually want? No reason to do it just cause someone told you to.
Honestly I'm mostly posting to say I'm surprised that username wasn't taken.
Yeah I'm not that technically clued up when it comes to these things. I'm pretty sure I'm not going to do it, I was mostly curious as to what you guys all have to say about it to be honest.
Yeah pretty neat huh? I tried it thinking it would suggest names with numbers on the end and stuff, but I guess I was just lucky.
It's popular, and apparently it's legal, but not really a huge deal in my opinion unless you have some specific functionality you want added to your iPhone.
There are some interesting jailbreak apps like SBSettings that allow you to access all the settings on your phone very quickly. There are some interesting lockscreen replacements that allow you to have a more useful lockscreen. There's some SMS replacement apps out there for the SMS-crazy. There's also an app that replaces the standard iPod app with a better one, that is pretty interesting (but I think you have to pay for it).
All in all, it's interesting and stuff, but for me no longer a huge must. There is a risk to damaging your iPhone if you have absolutely no clue what you are doing, but it's pretty small.

I jailbroke my 3G back in the day, it was awesome in lots of ways, like swiping over my status bar to get a number of buttons that allowed me to toggle my settings and things.
There are also a number of nice apps out there, like xGPS for free satnav, but I still wouldn't recommend dicking around with your phone unless you feel comfortable with what you're doing.
BiteSMS is pretty much the whole reason I have my my phone still jailbroken. SBSettings is kinda handy. Jailbreaking, however, is not a life changing experience unless you spend an unreasonable amount of time and effort making unregulated apps play nice with eachother, and then never ever update your phone again.

Oh yes, BiteSMS is an awesome app, and the ability to open a quick SMS compose window by hitting volume up/down and then tapping the volume popup is worth jailbreaking alone. I couldn't stand having to open the default SMS app every time I wanted to write a new message.
would one be able to say get all this music off a iphone after he jailbreaks it? caus my pc died and the hd is unsalvageable with about 98% of the music not from itunes .

I just got my first iphone less than a month ago after years of armtwisting from a friend. He taught me the ins and outs of jailbreaking.
Use itunes to back it up first. That way you can restore it if something goes bad. If you ever need to take it in for service you can always restore it to factory defaults via itunes. The itunes backup doesn't backup the jailbreak so you can do it while jailbroken and it will restore everything (contacts, music, IMs, etc..) except for homebrew apps like winterboard when/if you have to restore it.
My Story: I took it home and immediately tried limera1n. While it did work, after a few hours I started getting errors saying there was no sim installed but they went away after a reboot. Over the course of a week it got worse and worse to the point where even resetting it to factory defaults wouldn't make it see the sim. I restored it to defaults via itunes but since it wouldn't see the sim it wouldn't reactivate. I took it to the ATT store and the employee there showed me how to access the sim slot, reseat it and reactivated it for me. I used limera1n again and the sim problem happened 3 hours later. I then restored it again and reseated the sim myself. The problem went away. I waited a few days to jailbreak it again just to make sure it wasn't a hardware problem. So far it's been fine but I'm still not sure if it was because of limera1n, a bad sim slot or the sim itself but it's been fine for the past 2 weeks. So after 3 days unjailbroken with no sim problem, I did it again.
This time I used greenpois0n. It does the same thing as limera1n but doesn't create an icon. So far it's been a week, I haven't had the sim problem yet and it uses the same exploit so /shrug. Perhaps it was sitting on the shelf too long and reseating the sim fixed it.
All jailbreaking really does is allow you to run homebrew apps. You can always reset it back to factory settings before taking it in to applecare or whatever. Whether or not you use it to pirate software is a personal choice but there is plenty of free stuff too. Personally I just use it for iSpirit/themes and because I like to have more control over my device.

I can say with almost 100% confidence, it isn't the jailbreaking that is doing it. It's definitely a hardware issue.
I've been in "the scene" since the first jailbreak. Never heard of this.

You should totally jailbreak your iphone 4 if you want to.
The only phone that I think that you shouldn't jailbreak on is the iPhone 3g (and I suppose the original as well but who uses those now?) and that's because the thing becomes unbearably slow.
I use it so the lock screen so it displays useful items such as the weather, and my missed calls, emails and sms.
Once you jailbreak you can also create custom sms tones as well.

I jailbroke my 3G without any problems until I flashed to 4.0: Don't bother upgrading to 4.0 or higher unless you want your phone to slow to a crawl, jailbroken or not.

If anything the 3G is the best candidate for jailbreaking, since jailbreaking lets you have multitasking on OS 3.1.x instead of upgrading to 4.0 and watching your phone's display update at about three frames per second.

I gave my 3G to my girlfriend for her birthday, jailbroken with 4.0. It still works, but I wish that I knew of a way to flash it back.

I'd say give it a shot.
The warranty voiding is nothing a restore doesn't fix. It's practically fool proof.
