Problems with Gmail Mobile/Samsung Blackjack

So I'm messing around with Google's little mobile Gmail Java app, which lets you manage your Gmail account from your phone. This would be awesome (sending/receiving email normally is treated as a text message, which means I get charged every time. That is really gay), if it actually worked. I get the following error whenever I try to use the app:
This program can't access Gmail until you grant it permission to send and receive data over the network
I looked it up on Google's help center, which basically told me what I already knew. Unfortunately, the BlackJack doesn't seem to do things the same way. Even better, the damn user manual (whose link provided on the packaged CD was broken; I had to track down a PDF copy of it from some forum) says jack shit about network access permissions.
So, does anyone have a clue how to set the permissions I need to get this thing to work?
