Shank and it's not letting me use weapons in multi

Hello good people.
I come in search of answers as the googles and the gamefaqs etc etc give me no useful information.
A friend and I have been bashing away at Shank co-op for a good few hours now and have not
managed to achieve a single weapon upgrade. No shotgun no machete nothing. What gives? Occasionally
we the the mini gun from Predator but without the shotgun the game is a bit annoying. The pistols or
specifically having to use them exclusively makes the game even more repetitive.
Are the advanced weapons available without completing the single player campaign? We are unlocking alt
costumes left and right but no nuggery.
It would suck to have to play controller swaps single player finish the game then play co-op.
I have searched for trainers but sadly they only allow unlimited nados, health, quicksaves and 1 hit knife kills.
