Man I love how Penny Arcade revolves around one thing, a webcomic, and has spawned charities, gaming ads and an entire fucking expo. Yet the one thing it all hinges on is constantly messed up. You think Jerry and Mike could spring for a competent IT guy or something.

Remember when their hosting was shit for months on end? This is nothing in comparison.

Considering the fact that they have an entire freakin army of nerds at their service, then your comment rings even more true.

Giving random anonymous internet people you don't know admin-level access to your server doesn't seem like the best idea ever, to me.
or, you know, this could have just been a placeholder because the comic was late.
geez guys, you get this comic for free. chill out and let the men-who-would-be-boys do their work.
People are making bug reports because they're trying to help the site. Because, you know, we like PA and want it to do well.
The links to the new comic in the news post has been broken many, many, times in recent months. Thus the bug reports.
not the people bitching about how there isn't an army of "IT GUYZ" helping out.
yes, they've been broken before. this time it just looked like a placeholder. usually when the links are broken you get the 404 image with Tycho and Div.
Okay, if it is broken for you, try using another browser on your computer. If that doesn't work let me know what browsers you tried and I'll fix it.
Until then...

Doesn't work for me in FF : Mozilla/5.0 (Windows; U; Windows NT 5.1; en-US; rv:1.8.1.1) Gecko/20061204 Firefox/2.0.0.1
When I switched to IETab it also came up redX, but then refreshing made the image show up. IETab reports: Mozilla/4.0 (compatible; MSIE 6.0; Windows NT 5.1; SV1; .NET CLR 1.1.4322; .NET CLR 2.0.50727).
I'm also behind an ISA server, if that makes a difference, and based on my testing here: http://www.fiddlertool.com/useragent.aspx it looks like a Pragma: no-cache header gets added after I refresh after switching to IETab.
It doesn't work for me in either IE 6 or Firefox 2. I noticed the RSS feed droped two links to the comic yesterday, so I'm guessing there is something goofy going on.

Actually, with some persistent effort, I was able to log the response headers from all 5 webservers. I think perhaps you shouldn't be sending an Etag at all and depend just on Last-Modified if you cannot guarantee the same resource will get the same Etag on different refreshes (reference).
Okay this should be fixed. As it turns out the technician who pushed out the comic forgot to run checksums to make sure the servers all received the same file. I ran the checksums, saw that only 2/5 servers agreed on the latest comic, and forced a resync.
As far as lighttpd sending bad etags, that is a bug of lighttpd, and sadly the configuration variable to turn that off turns off some essential features of our site. I'm looking at an incremental upgrade of the webserver software within the next few weeks. I will be splitting our webservers 2/3, taking two offline and upgrading them, once they are confirmed to work pushing those two online and taking the other three offline, upgrade the remaining three and that's all she wrote.

Confirmed. WFM.
No rush on the server upgrade, I just wanted to be sure you were aware of the Etags issue. I certainly don't want major webserver surgery to stand in the way of some other things that I know you need to worry about .
Man, I remember when we had IRQs to deal with. Man those were annoying.
I was just talking about IRQs with a buddy at work last week. Now when you open up your system properties you see everyone playing nice and sharing and you've just got to say "Man, why couldn't you do this ten years ago?"

They should, they really fucking should, but they don't.
Yeah, but Alpha is responsible for the main site too isn't he? Assuming he hasn't ninja vanished for another six months or whatever.

There is also no file with the date of the comic (20070129.jpg).
I don't think I can remember the last time they missed a day. Is that what happened this time I wonder?
And then I have a deviantART here: http://scottewen.deviantart.com

Also, I can see the comic now.
Doesn't work for me in Firefox or IE.
Did you refresh with Ctrl-F5 to clear the cache?
