I have to do a research paper and I have no idea what to do it on. It has to be about an idea found in a significant source such as a statement of philosophy, a speech, law, a play or religious document from the Classical Age (600 BCE - 600 CE). Any help is appreciated. Thanks in advance.
Uh you're looking at most of the Golden Age of Greece (Plato, Socrates, Aristotle, Democritus, Zeno, Heraclitus, maybe Heraclitus was earlier I forget) up through the rise and fall of the Roman Empire (The Meditations of Marcus Aurelius, Epictetus, Vitrivius) and the compilation of the New Testament (the HOLY fuckin Bible). You're looking at a 1200 year period that represents the foundation of every element of Western society. Just could probably do a whole paper on one chapter from any one of these authors. You have so many options its really a matter of what you want to write about.
The source material is short and is full of commentary on society. In addition, other people will probably be less inclined to do a play when you could do some wanky piece of philosophy.
I have to disagree. The Allegory would be an easy choice - The Allegory has been analyzed to death, its hard to avoid in any philosophical discussion. You would certainly have no trouble finding your pick of sources.
However on a personal level I find the Allegory an annoying reference every time it comes up. Its over done. There are so many other things you could do your paper on.
The Magna Carta, and the idea of civil liberties, comes to mind. Or... really any of the fundamental principals that lead to the American Revolution... you could practically pick a sentence out of the Preamble to go from there.

Allegory of the Cave is a great idea.
What I'm saying is I second this.
