It's winter!

Disney-Bambi-s-Winter-Trail-135835.jpg

And unlike deer and rabbits, humans wear clothes in winter! So let's talk about them. As we talk about them, you all can serve my ulterior motive: the motive that I need to pick out my christmas wish-list.
Here's a bunch of stuff I just pulled off the Urban Outfitter's site (hatas gonna hate):
This or this
18754770_004_b?$detailmain$18754994_004_b?$detailmain$

this (but it's $$$),
18733501_041_b?$detailmain$

Also, definitely this:
19264662_004_b?$detailmain$
I'm a sucker for unnecessary side-buttons.

Maybe this, as I especially like the color.
18515973_030_b?$detailmain$

And this is kind of boring, but I'd probably wear it a lot.
18755942_001_b?$detailmain$

But, uh, I can't have them all.

Also, here is a post wherein it is explained how to dress yourself. You should probably check it if you don't know how to dress yourself.

GIS gave me this as the number one result for fashion:
fashion-illustrator.jpg

But silly google, it's winter. So what are we to do?

You all know the fashion drill: discuss

I don't know if it's been pointed out in the old thread, but Jesse Thorn of the excellent Voice of Young America works with an equally-fantastic filmmaker Adam Lisagor to produce Put This On, a blog and video podcast about men's fashion. It should be, in my opinion, required reading and watching for anyone trying not to look like a hobo.

None of your Urban Outfitter links work, they just take you to a "choose your region" screen and then through to the main site.

Belated but if you choose a region, then hit his links it'll work fine. I hate sites that are designed like that.

It just took me to the default page for the UK site. Most likely a quirk of the site for people not sharing regions.

I'm a plain, minimalist man myself. I don't particularly care for any of those (especially the gaggle of extra seams on the first grey one) but the last one I like most of all I suppose.

The side buttons would be neat for a "sometimes I'll wear this when I'm in the mood" but for a daily coat, no thanks.

I bought recently an old-fashioned 32 oz. wool pea coat from Schott. Apparently they used to make these for the US Navy back in WWII.

Regardless, I wanted something that would actually keep me warm, and those jackets in the OP seem a little flimsy for the average winter up here. The fabric on this thing is like armor plating.

The fucker is warm, I tell you. I've yet to wear it outside, but I'm confident that It'll keep me warm with very little layering down to -20 centigrade or so, although if this winter is anything like the previous one I'll need to see how it handles -35 centigrade. Probably needs a sweater and such underneath :P

    I don't believe in winter.

This is aided by the fact that I only have to be outside for seconds at a time.

Hence, I don't own any heavy jackets.. and I intend to keep it that way.

I got a regular US Navy peacoat last winter. I don't think I will ever need another heavy coat. It is definitely well made, and if the weather is absolutely freezing a sweater underneath keeps me plenty warm. All for ~$80.

I live in Southern California, so while it gets chilly, it never gets cold in the manner of snow and whatnot. How do people keep warm in places where it does get cold? And don't just say 'layers', that doesn't help much.

See, I'm fairly certain the scarves and hats and jackets and sweaters are different where its cold as opposed to what we buy here. Being that I need new jackets and sweaters, I've started shopping around. Many sweaters and jackets are quite thin on average, and it can be hard to find anything whose length extends past the hips. Even the tights/stockings are thin. Sometimes I will pull on a pair when it gets particularly chilly but I rarely feel like they accomplish much since most are 'fashion tights', and finding ones made out of a thicker and warmer materials has been a bitch.

I need a new pair of gloves, but nothing too thick - I don't need padding or whatever, just something to keep the wind off and still have decent finger-grip. My previous pair were these great Isotoner part-leather ones that were just thick enough to keep warm but thin enough to be able to tie your shoes while wearing them; I've still got one but lost the left one, and they don't seem to make them anymore. Maybe I should just get a pair of bike gloves or something, those seem close to the right consistency, but most of them are butt-ugly.

My dad recently retired from city transit (he was a bus driver) and in their annual uniform orders they could get these "driving gloves" that are actually pretty cool, I find. They're actually equestrian riding gloves--black, tight-fitting, but allow you to still feel what you're holding/gripping.

I really like them because I don't really want gloves necessarily to keep my hands warm, but more to keep me from coming into direct contact with really cold and possibly dirty surfaces (car door handles, outdoor staircase railings, steering wheels, etc.). I like them!

These are black gloves with velcro closing at the openings. I have them "set" tight but they stretch well enough I can slip my hands in and out without having to mess with the velcro.

I find it particularly difficult to be fashionable in the winter (unless the snowboarder look counts as fashion). The rest of the year? No problem. I love my peatcoat, but when mid-fall hits it gets put away and the winter coat comes out. In the winter I'm a huge advocate of function over form.

I love living in Canada and I love the winter, but I just don't understand the people who can stand shivering their butts off in the name of being fashionable all season. Oh well, I'm not complaining or anything. The ladies look great in their winter gear.

I like winters in Sacramento. There are only so many permutations of shorts and short-sleeve shirts you can do, and it's summer here, like, 8 months per year. The weather just dipped below 80 last week.

I spend my winters mostly in jeans and long-sleeve cotton shirts, sometimes long-sleeve button-ups left untucked.

This is pretty much me during the winter months:

    image1xl.jpg

I have maybe a dozen of those shirts, all various colors. I like color.

Hey, this glove talk is handy! It does get cold enough here that your hands will start chapping and aching, but gloves are hard to find. I'm a small lass with tiny hands, so the adult gloves are too big . . . but kid gloves are too short in the fingers.

Advice is all still generally the same--buy and wear clothes that are quality made and actually fit you, going a large as you need to to satisfy the second bit there.

I believe there are some specific bits, like going with vertical stripes instead of horizontal and certain types of suits or jackets (double-breasted VS single, etc.) may be more flattering on larger men. I don't really follow them though (as in, I'm not aware of many of them), but I'm sure someone else can come up with them.

Really, just buy things that actually fit. Don't try to squeeze into something because you're embarrassed by how many Xs should be in front of the L or whatever.

Horizontal stripes and lots of spandex.

What Laos said is right - buy stuff that fits and looks nice. You can look pretty stylish no matter how big you are. I think that, aside from a few self-evident things here and there, larger folks can wear largely the same things as their thinner brethren.

    Hooray, welcome back Fashion thread!

I've been meaning to ask you something kind of embarrassing. I feel like I'm finally growing up and dislike how boxers fit my body, and want to graduate to boxer briefs. In the words of Ze Frank, I want to "combine the adjustment strap technology of the boxer with the fertility reduction of the brief", and boxers just don't do it for me any more.

I have a few pair of Hanes bb's, but they're boring. I was wondering where I should shop to find them with nice colors/patterns? The ones at Macy's were either the boring Hanes kind, or had stupid designs plastered on the fabric/waistband. So where do I go?
