I am going to place a wild guess that the missions will be available as DLC sometime down the road.
Rockstar typically doesn't do that, but here's hoping.
Well Red Dead was the first in-game pre-order bonuses, right? And all they had were horses or guns, not playable missions. Missions are kind of different than that.
As much as I hate the pre order bonus in principle, I generally don't care about them in reality.
The stuff they give is usually done after the game is completed and gives bonuses that weren't in mind when making the game proper so I don't really miss em.
I think Im just going to get it from Amazon anyways, and then sell the suit to some completionist online and recoup the cost of the game.
The day Dead Rising 2 came out, I actually MADE $5. I went home and threw the DLC code up on EBay, for $2. I woke up the next morning and it sold for $65. What the hell - you easily could have walked into Best Buy, paid $5 less and got the SAME CODE, and then sold the game.
So I'm assuming someone out there will be willing to pay for the suit. If they can have the dumb pre-order bonuses, I can make money off them too I guess.

Is there anything stopping someone from buying the game from more than one place, redeeming this code and then returning the game? Has anyone ever done that?

Not being a dirty thief is stopping me.
The only thing he'd be thieving is a digital code from GameStop
Their reasoning is simple....you're going to buy it anyway. As long as they keep making a product you want, they have you over a barrel. There's simply no downside to it for them, because every publisher does it now. Sure, you could not buy their game, and that hurts their bottom line a little. But they're banking that you'll buy it anyway, and even if you don't shell out money for the DLC later, some people will, so it's a net-win for them.
Capitalism. Ain't it a bitch.
Locking out actual quests/gameplay as retailer-exclusive preorder bonuses IS a new level of suck though. :?
Not anymore. I'll borrow it from a friend and play it then.

Which is fine, you're well within your rights to do so.
Publishers are still banking on the fact that most people won't or can't do this.
I also have little doubt that publishers are chomping at the bit for a Steam-like system for the next iteration of consoles, where the used/second-hand market evaporates entirely.
Great, can't wait to see how Europe gets screwed on this one!

UPDATE: Rockstar has confirmed the same bonuses will be available in other territories too. In the UK, The Naked City and Badge Pursuit Challenge will come with GAME pre-orders, A Slip of the Tongue will accompany Play's pre-orders, "The Broderick" suit will come with Amazon UK pre-orders, and "The Sharpshooter" will ship with pre-orders from Zavvi. Rockstar also confirmed that gamers in Canada would get the same deals through the same retailers as their American counterparts.
While initially a GameStop pre-order exclusive, The Naked City bonus "vice case" will be available for digital purchase after the game's release. "All of the L.A. Noire pre-order content will be made available for purchase as DLC at some point after the game comes out," a Rockstar representative confirmed. "We have long planned to do this for all digital pre-order items."
I'm so glad they're being nice enough to let us buy the stuff that should have been in the game in the first place. Thank you, Rockstar!
Paying for DLC doesn't bother me in most cases. Where it does is in this one. Extra case(s) that come with a pre-order from a specific retailer. That you can then pay for. I take issue with that (suits and other crap doesn't bother me).
EDIT: By issue I mean slight issue. I'm still planning on playing the shit out of this game.

Yeah. By all means, continue working on the game and give us some release day stuff that you didn't have time to put on the disc before certification. Add on a new chapter or some multiplayer DLC on a staggered schedule to keep people playing your game longer.
But pretty please don't make stuff that you can only get by buying the game from a specific retailer and then charge us money for it if we didn't have the foresight to buy the game four times. Honestly, I should expect that if I lay down $60 for a fresh new game in the original packaging, I should expect to get the exact same product as everyone else.
I'm with Jefe when it comes to "level of upset-ness". Both they know it's a BS marketing tactic and we know it's a BS marketing tactic. Sadly, the quality of the game out-weighs my annoyance at their pre-order campaign.
Sadly, when it comes to console games, it's either:
Buy it now, pay full price, play along with "the crowd" so you can talk about it while people are into it, and just accept that the DLC thing is out of your hands.
or....
Don't buy the game for 6-12 months, get it for 20-30% off (if they've brought it down at all) or buy it used without the proper case/manual/pre-order items, and (the worst part imho) having no one to talk about the game with.
For example I'm currently playing through Assassin's Creed 2 because of my "Ubisoft DRM" protest ended when they removed the DRM. Not a fucking soul gives a shit about AC2 anymore. So anytime something cool happens, or I wanna talk about the plot with someone, I'm SOL.
This game definitely looks awesome, but the real hook for me was hearing it plays like Ace Attorney. I've been itching for another game like that.
I'm hoping the combat is actually downplayed, it's the least interesting part of a detective story.
It looks ridiculous, unfortunately. I mean, the gameplay vids show the player stalking down a hallway with a shotgun shooting mans and not worrying for his life. That's upsetting, but the rest of the game looks absolutely incredible to me.
But that would require a fully scanned and realistic Christina Hendri....
Actually thats a fine idea.
This.... x1,000 this.
Also, I agree with manwiththemachinegun. I don't mind combat at all, but hopefully it's within reason. If by the end of the game I've murdered half of LA, a large part of me is going to be sad.

Same here, as much as I enjoyed the gunplay in Red Dead I'm hoping they'll show some restraint.
As for the shotgun bit, an optimist's perspective could see that as them making the video more exciting. Hopefully.

They seem to not be focusing on it much in their trailers, so here's hoping.

Wow. The new trailer features at least 4 cast members of Madmen. Perhaps this will be a game I can con my girl into playing if I convince her Jon Hamm is the final boss.
I haven't been this hyped for a game in years probably.

On the shooting, I was reading the recent OXM preview at work and they said they didn't fire a single bullet in the sample they played (and it was the first sentence in the preview), so there's that, for what it's worth.
Going on previous Rockstar games and their performance on one console relative to the other... I'd say 360. Both GTA4 and Red Dead Redemption ran much better/had more detail on that platform.

No mention of Australia though, but I imagine it'll be divided among the retailers here all the same.

DNF comes out May 3
Then La Noire, The Witcher 2 AND Brink all come out on the same day
The parts of the shooting they've shown looked really janky to me, they may have specifically chosen a segment without any.
Oh snap really?
That's just cruel.
Goddamnit May - get here quicker.
