So, let's get a thread for the Wario Land series of games going. I've beaten 3+4, and I think it's a vastly unappreciated series.
So, of course, let's start with the first one!
Wario Land 1:
First debuting in 1994, Wario Land 1 began as a take on the Mario franchise where you play as Wario, Mario's shorter, fatter, but definitly
stronger cousin. Or friend. Or rival. It really hasn't been explained as of yet. Anyways, getting back to the game, you get put in Wario, the typical anti-hero's shoes, on his quest to make as much cash as possible and defeat tthe Brown Sugar Pirates.
Unlike Mario games, Wario can't be harmed by normal enemies, instead bowling them over in order to use them as throwable objects and things to jump from. Poor bad guys. He can also collect special hats along the way, enabling him to use special moves such as Butt-Stomping and Breathing fire.
Wario Land 2:
Wario Land 2 begins as the Brown Sugar pirates once again try to annoy and rob Wario by breaking into the castle he gained at the end of the first Wario Land 1. Unlike most handheld games at the time, there were several alternate endings and pathways, and the only way to truly get all the treasure possible and the best, real ending is to find all the other alternate ones.
Like the third game, Wario is completely invincible, and loses coins rather than health. As such, this game is more of a puzzle/platformer hybrid, and he must use his enemy's attacks to change form to solve specific puzzles, such as catching on fire to destroy a wall marked with a "flame icon", or becoming flat to get past a narrow hole. As Wario is indestructable, bosses try to force him out of the boss area, effectivly restarting the match, making some fights long and drawn out if you don't know what to do.
Wario Land 3:
Finally, the yellow overalls in color! Differing from the other games in terms of storyline, Wario is out flying one day when his plane crashes. After stumbling around, he finds a cave with a musicbox. He opens it, and becomes sucked inside to find a whole world. The god of the musicbox tells Wario to seek out the sacred instruments that can free him, and in return Wario is now invincible and can keep all the treasure he finds. Obviously, he agrees.
Like in 2, he has to use his enemy's attacks to navigate past certain areas, like eating an apple to get fatter so he can break strong blocks underneath him. Unlike in 2 though, all of Wario's abilities, like headbutting, butt-stomping and swimming have been lost and must be found before being able to be used.
Wario Land 4:
And finally, we get to Wario Land 4, his leap to the GBA and one of my favorite games. The game starts out oddly enough, with Wario reading about a recently unearthed pyramid and it's massive amount of treasure. Obviously, being the greedy bastard he is, he decides to go there and loot the ancient temple. Following a black cat in, he falls down a hole and becomes trapped. The only way out is to navigate through the temple, defeat the bosses and get as much treasure as possible.
Unlike in 3, Wario begins with all his abilities intact, though, he actually has a health bar consisting of hearts. This doesn't stop you from using monster's attacks to your advantage to solve puzzles though, and you'll need to utilise all of them to your advantage.
In each stage, you'll need to collect treasure, 4 pieces of a keystone, which allow you to open the boss door when all are collected, and a "key-ghost" which opens the next room/level to you. For some odd reason, the pyramid has minigame rooms inside, and the medals earned from playing them allow you to buy weapons with which you can lower the boss's starting health.
And for some reason, someone wrote a "choose your own adventure" book based on 4.

FANTASTIC game. Had it been in color and on the SNES, it'd probably be regarded as one of the best games of our time.
EDIT: And, aside from VBWL and WL1, I didn't like any of the other games in the series. I felt the game was best when it was a standard platformer.
The original was one of my favorite Gameboy games. the microgame based on it in Smooth Moves.
everyone loves the Wario Land games around here actually
me, I prefer Mario
god ssbb will be full of fart jokes
I heard it was good, but short.
Pretty much. I liked it a lot (it's Treasure, of course it's good) but I beat it with a rental. I'd still buy it if I found it for $10 or less, though.
I'm excited for the new DS Wario game.

Tell me more.
Wow. That brings me back.
Only one I played was that shitty Gamecube 3D sidescroller by Treasure. What a piece of shit.
You can really see how the team went from Wario Land to Wario Ware and Rhythm Tengoku afterwards.

Then I skipped 2 and 3, finally buying 4. I didn't quite enjoy it as much as number 1. It felt a whole lot shorter than the first one.

How can you have a 3d...side scroller? Especially when the game looks like this
Doesn't look like a side-scroller to me.
There are some for the Zelda: Oracle games, too. Godawful, those were. Or at least Seasons, don't have Ages to compare.
Maybe I'm crazy, but I think a console remake of some sort is in order. Polygonal, rendered, sprites, "Paper Wario," whatever best emulates the 3-D effect for gameplay. Music scores and maps and such are already done, so I imagine it'd chiefly be a graphic overhaul.
And I'd think the Cube or Classic controls should be able to handle the VB controller chores.
What I got to play, I enjoyed more than Mario Sunshine. I want to buy it when I've got sufficient income and can find it for a good price.
I'm amused by his look in Super Mario Land 2, where he's googly-eyed.
Same, I'm surprised it's not included in the OP.
I'm unsure about the controls, though... I mean, you just use the control pad to move, right? How's jumping done? I'm reluctant about touch-screen for that...
I used to have Wario Land, but it was a glitched copy that I wound up returning... I do wish I had the series, or better, Nintendo would release a collection for DS.
Like Mega Man Legends? Then check out my story, Legends of the Halcyon Era - An Adventure in the World of Mega Man Legends on TMMN and AO3!

It seems like I missed out on some neat games. Invicibility you say? Sign me up!
Much love to the fat angry man. I have never played a game attached to the Wario brand (be it land, world, ware or even woods) that hasn't been a highly enjoyable experience.
More power to the garlic eating, treasure stealing, nose picking, rotten to the core, rotund gentleman.
Plus he is always my character in Mario Party/Kart/Sports games.
Wario is the party star!
I'm-a Wario, I'm-a gonna wiiin!
Come on!
Etc.
Inside a toilet (?)
Are... are you me?
Wario's Woods in particular devoured my childhood.
And I don't think it was a sidescroller?
