too soon for time off?

So, I'm the type who never usually asks for time off, even if I'm sick as a dog, I'll still come into work if I know I'm needed. In anycase though, I've started a new job, which I love, I've been there for almost 3 months, but I want to take a week off for personal reasons. My question is if requesting time off this soon is unreasonable professionally?

I'm working on a project for data security in the IT dept for a large healthcare provider to provide some background. There was a lot of workload from the start, but right now the higher-ups are deciding the next phase, so there's been a lull. Thoughts?

    I dunno, I'd ask for it off if you need it. The worst thing is they'll say no.

    Unless whoever you ask is a dick. In that case, I guess it's a judgement call.

    Depends on what the personal reason is. Also do you have paid vacation or not?

    All I can think is that if you need the time off you should ask for it.

    I'm pretty sure they won't fire you for the asking.

    Too soon depends on the job and the need. Some jobs bust your hump for asking for anything off within the first 3 months or not around major holidays. Others don't care.

    3 months is usually the "safe" guideline, but if you need time off talk to your boss. Be honest and just come out with it: "Hi boss, I know I'm coming up on my 3 month anniversary and normally I wouldn't think about taking time off so soon, but something came up and I really need to take a week off of work. I realize that we've just hit a lull so I figured this would be the best time for it."

    So, no, it's not unreasonable. There are plenty of instances where a person will start a job with the condition that they'll have to take time off, sometimes without pay, to get something done after starting a job. Take moving, for example. Generally, it's bad form to call in sick repeatedly after being hired, or giving extremely short notice for vacations w/o regard for timelines or anything else. I don't think you need to worry about either situation.
