Finalizing upgrades on PC

ShinyRedKnightShinyRedKnight Registered User regular
So I've been researching for awhile, and made some mentions of it in the chat thread, about my next PC upgrade. Here is my current set up;

e6850 core 2 duo 3ghz
4 gb ddr2 ram
geforce 9800gtx 512 mb
Seagate Barracude 250 gb hdd
750 watt psu
Asus rampage formula mobo
Windows 7 32 bit
1920x1080 resolution

The games I mainly play currently are WoW, Starcraft 2, Crysis, Dragon Age, Mass Effect 2, and Civilization 5. These games have been running well on high or near max settings. WoW has been running well on ultra, with issues only popping up during the current event when tons of people show up, otherwise its pretty good.

The games I am looking forward to are Cataclysm, Dragon Age 2, Deus Ex: HR, and Crysis 2.

My budget is about $500, but right off the bat I have to set aside a part of it for a secondary hdd and a new case as my current one is not holding up well.

My two big options are the gpu and cpu. Of course, I can get a core 2 quad for my 775 socket, but that would last me only a year as I hope to be getting a newer socket mobo/ cpu within the next year.

However, a gpu upgrade can last me at least two years, I think, as my current one has. If I were to get a new gpu, I was thinking of getting the geforce 470 gtx, http://www.newegg.com/Product/Product.aspx?Item=N82E16814130550.

Sure, the cpu would hold me back in some games, but the gpu would help a bit for now, and would last me longer than a cpu upgrade with a 775 socket, according to my plans.

Is my reasoning good? Would such an upgrade be a good choice all things considered? Sorry if I miss something big, this is still my first gaming rig.

Go buy yourself an Antec 300 case.

They're cheap, cool, easy to use, and look fantastic.

I bought mine for $72 CAN tax included.

GTX 470 is a good buy at that price point, and a good upgrade for you. The prices on those look like they've gone up about $15 recently, though.

Antec 300 is a great case - $60 on Newegg.

A new video card probably isn't going to change anything in WoW, FYI - that's very CPU-dependent.

Yeah, that's what I've been thinking. But I've been running around cities and raiding even in 25 mans with maxed out settings at 1920x1080 without any real problems. Really, the only time I can recall some hiccups is with the invasion, and when I first get into a city like Dalaran (but after like 30 seconds Dalaran smooths out).

I guess my main worries are some of the newer games mentioned and upcoming releases, and those should be more gpu dependent, right?

A quad core processor is probably a good investment at this point. Ive had a Q6600 for about 3 years now and it has yet to be a limiting factor in any game.

GPU's, well, the way i do it is basically buy something that should last for ~2 years in the 150 dollar range. My last card was a 4670 which i picked up for 45 bucks (it was a return and had no box, but it was retailing for about 120, i just got really lucky) and just a couple months ago i picked up a 5770. Ill probably get another card in 2012.

Cataclysm, Dragon Age 2, Deus Ex: HR, and Crysis 2 will all run fine on that rig. Stash the $500 for when another generation of consoles come out and you actually need to upgrade.

I second this. Best case I have ever owned. Stock cooling that is quiet and effective. Plenty of space. Easy to work on (they give you a hojillion thumb screws for everything)

    Oh, it looks good too.

I was thinking of setting the money aside, but I really want to take advantage of the sales during the holidays.

Usually when I have spare money laying around, its gonna get eaten away by snacks and little things that I don't need and aren't good for me.

But thanks for the suggestions, especially for vouching for the Antec case. My current one is a thermaltake and the power button on the case came off after a year of use.

Newegg's sales started today (11/24) at 1pm PST. Go take a look!

I'm partial to ATI's cards, myself. The 5000-series are still holding up even after the 6000-series showed up.

I think I can safely say none of those games will benefit from more processor cores.

If you do get another video card and are not going to be using your current one want to send me a PM? I would like to have it to mess with, and I could pay shipping plus a few extra bucks.

You will not be disappointed with that Antec case. It's fantastic.
