Besides Littlefinger did refer to Ned as a player.

If stopping Melisandre from sacrificing Mance's son isn't a move in the game then i'm not sure what is. You don't have to try to be a king to play. Hell, every open "supreme" ruler we've seen so far has been terrible at it. Except maby Dany, who is sort of okay at it and still makes a ton of mistakes.

they're both too damned honorable to really be able to compete with the likes of littlefinger or varys
littlefinger also pointedly called ned a fool, and made a distinction between those that thought they were players, but were really only pawns, like Cersei.

In that case Davos is also a player, because he made that exact same move. Pretty much the only move he's made but he did make it.

I can buy that Jon is a player as far as the Wall is concerned, actually. That's a well made argument and it makes a lot of sense. But in the greater game of thrones, he doesn't figure in. At least not yet. Maybe when things go to hell in a handbasket and the Others start streaming over the wall.

Just finished A Feast For Crows. Martin's "to be continued" note is a serious downer. :?
So Martin is going to announce the fifth book soon, yeah? The one that will actually contain the characters I cared about in the first three books? Any day now, yeah?

No that's Robb. Jon is definitely ahead of Ned.
Besides Littlefinger did refer to Ned as a player.

He does not want to be King, he knows that what is going on the North is more important.
But as I said, turning Winterfell down was a move, even if Jon isn't interested in playing.
ned was definitely a player -- he was critical in unseating aerys and getting robert on the throne
boosh I am playing the game of thrones?
It's about manipulating and amassing power the way you want it to go, for your own reasons.

I think what Jon wants is a King who will realise the importance of the North, who that is he doesn't really care.
Jon is willing to do pretty much anything that is necessary to beat whatever comes over that wall.

YOU ARE ALL MY PAWNS!
Well, now I know what I'm putting on in the shop after Independence Day.
BTW, I'm down to the last few chapters in A Feast For Crows and it's good times being able to read all these spoilers.
What spring does with the cherry trees.
it would have been a better movie if it had just started with Yulaw beating up an entire planet and just focused on that for the next two hours
Needs more Doran Martell
That very last bit was cool, but otherwise meh.

Jon is not playing WAY smarter than Ned.
or: Cersei Lannister And Her Increasingly Insane Psychoses
I prefer this
It has a nice ring to it.
Bale knows what's up. Doran is cold as ice underneath that gouty old grandfather exterior.

In this book, though, Cersei chapters are the best. Also the chapters involving the Iron islands.
Why are all the fantasy writers suffering from bad health.
Obama needs to give us a hand here.
and at least Patrick Rothfuss has his shit together!
Brandon Sanderson is going to be writing every ongoing fantasy series by 2012.
Well, except for the Malazan books. Erickson and ICE will probably have a full set of Malazan encyclopedias out by then.
Well i started following GRRM's LJ and I guess I can't say i'm disappointed.
