If stopping Melisandre from sacrificing Mance's son isn't a move in the game then i'm not sure what is. You don't have to try to be a king to play. Hell, every open "supreme" ruler we've seen so far has been terrible at it. Except maby Dany, who is sort of okay at it and still makes a ton of mistakes.

Jon specifically isn't playing, which of course is a move in the game.

is jon "specifically" not playing? has he at some point gone "you know, I could take a run at this king stuff, but -- nahhh"

    I don't think he has
stannis did offer him winterfell, which he turned down because of his oath to the night's watch

    not quite a kingship though
Exactly. Jon remains steadfastly loyal to his oath, being one of the very characters in the series to whom that means something.

He does not want to be King, he knows that what is going on the North is more important.

But as I said, turning Winterfell down was a move, even if Jon isn't interested in playing.

It's never been just about being king though. Nedd never wanted to be king, neither does Littlefinger or any number of players.

It's about manipulating and amassing power the way you want it to go, for your own reasons.

I would argue that Jon honestly doesn't give a shit about the crown.
Remember, he has sacrificed a lot to fulfil his oaths. He was in love with Ygritte, and his actions indirectly killed her.

I think what Jon wants is a King who will realise the importance of the North, who that is he doesn't really care.

Jon is willing to do pretty much anything that is necessary to beat whatever comes over that wall.

Jon you mean? I suppose it's debatably whether he's a player or not right now, but I definitely think he has an interest between his involvement with
Stannis, The Night's Watch and the Wildlings.

they're both too damned honorable to really be able to compete with the likes of littlefinger or varys

littlefinger also pointedly called ned a fool, and made a distinction between those that thought they were players, but were really only pawns, like Cersei.

In that case Davos is also a player, because he made that exact same move. Pretty much the only move he's made but he did make it.

    That's what I'm saying.
I can buy that Jon is a player as far as the Wall is concerned, actually. That's a well made argument and it makes a lot of sense. But in the greater game of thrones, he doesn't figure in. At least not yet. Maybe when things go to hell in a handbasket and the Others start streaming over the wall.

BTW, I'm down to the last few chapters in A Feast For Crows and it's good times being able to read all these spoilers.

In this book, though, Cersei chapters are the best. Also the chapters involving the Iron islands.

Brandon Sanderson is going to be writing every ongoing fantasy series by 2012.

Well, except for the Malazan books. Erickson and ICE will probably have a full set of Malazan encyclopedias out by then.

So Martin is going to announce the fifth book soon, yeah? The one that will actually contain the characters I cared about in the first three books? Any day now, yeah?

    Any...

    Day.
