So I just recently discovered my taste for house/trance music on XM radio (got a 3 month trial). However, I'm pretty clueless on artists and albums for this genre of music (also...what the hell is the difference between house/trance/techno/etc etc?).
Recommendations that involve combining video game music or rock bands would be great as well (listened to a remix of a Muse song recently and enjoyed it).
Eric Prydz, Armin van Buuren, etc. Also anything mixed by Pete Tong or Judge Jules (oh man I'm totally showing my age).
There is a series of compilation albums published in the UK called Euphoria that is quite well regarded, and the Ministry of Sound Annuals might give you some good suggestions if you have a look at the track listings.
When I think of House I think of a drum kick on each count of the measure (1-2-3-4), a slower tempo, usually some type of non-synthetic instrument (like a regular piano, or cello, or something), maybe some vocals or a repeating quote of some kind, and something not nearly in your face as techno. Still, though, there are usually a lot of effects used.
When I think of techno, I also think of a drum kick (or equivalent), but at a faster tempo, with really loud synth leads. I don't listen to much techno, so can't help you much there.
In case you couldn't tell, I'm partial to thick, distorted bass leads. Anyways, Wikipedia has a long list of House Artists - start there, plug some of this into Pandora or last.fm, and you'll be good to go.
What I'm currently listening to:
DjKIRA's Universal (7-23-10) (Hybridized has lots of great sets, and they're all free)
Check out BBC Radio 1's Essential Mix. They feature a new DJ every week.
Scour Beatport for new music. There's a lot of terrible techno on there, but it's a good place to sample different artists.
Whenever you have questions about a genre refer to Ishkur's Guide to Electronic Music.
Stay away from dubstep. It will rot your brain.

House music tends to be a lot more repetitive, but I have a preference for trance, so...
For a fun way to explore the various styles of electronic music, see how they are connected, hear examples and get some names to check out, this website is great:
I mostly like techno and house. I'm not sure what's going on with trance these days, honestly.
I've also gotten really lazy about searching for music. I normally just follow a few podcasts and see what's going on. I like to follow the Resident Advisor podcast:
It's kind of like tech house with a bunch of Latin Rhythms. Basically, DJ's like him, Luciano, and Ricardo Villalobos are pushing that sound.
Sound Cloud is a good place to find DJ sets.
You should just look up for sets of a lot of the bigger names there for house. House really is a pretty big umbrella for music to fall under. They all have different styles, but will all fall under house.
Mark Farina
Roger Sanchez
Danny Tenaglia
Omar S
Felix Da Housecat
Sander Kleinenberg
Derrick Carter
One good thing about electronic music is that you've got DJ's doing the legwork for you and weeding out a lot of stuff. You just have to find some DJ's with similar tastes.
It's normally pretty good, but it's 90% European techno and pretty heavily influenced by the Berghaim scene going on in Berlin right now. I enjoy it, but am somewhat disappointed in the lack of Detroit in it. I've been slacking on it and haven't listened to it in about a month :P
The Techno DJ's I currently am loving are following:
Stacey Pullen
Joseph Capriati
Jerome Sydenham
Samuli Kemmppi
Ritchie Hawtin
Honestly, I wish I had a good Deep House or Chicago House podcast to add in to the other stuff I listen to. So, if anyone knows of some of those, post here for me, please :P
I ate the entire cake. At one point, I remember becoming aware of the oppressive fullness building inside of me, but I kept eating out of a combination of spite and stubbornness. No one could tell me not to eat an entire cake - not my mom, not Santa, not God - no one. I would eat cake whenever I damn well pleased. It was my cake and everyone else could go fuck themselves.
My brother showed me Digitally Imported a few years back, and I ended up getting hooked on Trance, especially the Vocal stuff. Somehow the breakdown and build up effect gets me every time, well assuming the music is good.
Delerium's "Silence" and Robert Miles' "Children" are both examples of Trance you may know already.
The build up coming out of the first chorus in this song is one of my favorite pieces of music, and a great example of what Trance is about in general:

Also, with dubstep, ONLY get dubstep from Hyperdub, who are the original record label behind the subgenre. They've been at it for years, and pretty much only their stuff is reliably any good. They also introduced Burial to the world, and it's his fault that the shit even got so popular. And he only has two albums to his name.
Retards on youtube adding a two step and bass sine wave to "like a g6" are not fucking dubstep.
By the way, check out Hybrid. My favorite trance besides the very obscure Japanese artist known only as Next Tribe (you cannot find much of his stuff besides one or two uploads to youtube)

For some good house, Deadmau5 has some nice stuff. Trance? BT, period.

Generally, it's either house or techno, but sometimes they're throw in more ambient stuff or even dub step. This week's is pretty nice.
When it's good it's really good, but be prepared to hear stuff you won't like. By far the best mix this year was the one done by reboot.

Lies! Check out Skream for some chillin' dubstep, or Mochipet for something a bit more dramatic.
Good sub required
