Basically what you do is you get those books and then fuck Lord of the Rings forever. Their deal is that it takes place in a mostly realistic medieval fantasy land and deal with wars between various aristocratic families because everyone thinks they deserve to sit on the throne. That's right, no sissy elves or bearded dwarves all up in here. Also there's undead guys and dragons and shit but they're peripheral enough that by the time they show up you've totally forgotten that this is a fantasy world and you're like holy shit because you just read like 300 pages of people fucking their sisters and drinking heroin as their only form of medicine and prepubescent royalty. It has some of the least bullshitty fantasy dialogue and writing out there in literature and doesn't make up too many words to describe things that already exist in the real world.
Did I mention that guys fuck their sisters in there? Shit, you should be reading it right now, what the hell is wrong with you?
The first four books are out by now and the fifth one has been imminent for like 2 years (but Martin promises it's really almost finished now, for realsies, cross his heart and hope to die). There are 7 books planned in total so we should keep on being cockteased for an extra 17 years or so at this rate. Each book is a massive doorstop, clocking in at around a thousand pages each. And no bullshit big-ass Harry Potter font in there, that's a thousand small-print, dialogue-heavy, no-teen-angst pages.
