My brother has been having issues with his hard drive. He keeps getting messages that his C drive had 'broken clusters' or something along the lines of that.
He was told to run check disk, which he did and windows said it found and fixed a problem. However, the issue has come up again.
He also had issues with McAfee where Windows couldn't recognize it, he thinks that may be part of the problem, but I'm not too sure.
Any one have any ideas as to what the problem is and how to fix it? This computer is rather important to him as its the only one he has to do his animation and 3D work for school. Thanks!
the Broken Clusters warning means that a specific spot on the disk is damaged. Repairing it will attempt to move data off of those broken sectors, but since there is already a file-system on the disk it's hard to completely hide the bad spot.
It would probably be in your brother's best interest to get a new hard drive if he cares about his data.
Any ideas for a good hard drive for animation/regular use? I think he wants something in the 500gb range. I'll look around and see what you guys think of the ones I find.
Check out prices on the WD Caviar <color> drives. Also the Seagate drives. Cyber Monday is "tomorrow" (it's 11/28 as I write this) so you should be able to find some killer deals. He may as well grab a 1TB or 2TB if the price is similar.
E: and make him invest in a second HDD and some backup software if it's the only way he can get schoolwork done.

Barring that, Samsung probably has the best rated drives at the moment. Stay away from Western Digital's "Green" drives.
I'm having a really hard time resisting that.
Must. Stay. Strong.
Yeah, I got two for my brother. I'm really trying resist getting two for myself as I recent got the WD black 1 tb.
