New computer, Windows 7, web sites and forums all in italics?! EDIT: fixed

This is sort of following on my last topic, in case anyone read it and wants to know:
My dad tried to replace my mom's faulty motherboard, rush ordered it due to my mom being antsy with a lack of a computer, but the site he bought it from never sent it. My mom got sort of catatonic over PC withdrawal so he threw up his hands and bought a new computer.

So I've set up my parents' new Windows 7 computer for them, and for no conceivable reason at all, lots of stuff on the internet is italicized, including most forums:

As I type, I can't tell the difference between this and this.

I've done Google searches and apparently this is a common problem with a million recommended solutions but a low chance of any of them working (for everything that "worked for me," you'll find three other posts that say it didn't work). I've tried several things, fiddled with the browser fonts (but nothing about them had been changed to begin with), reinstalled several fonts, even disabled some sort of MS networking system. Nothing helps.

Has anyone else experienced this? I'll keep trying different things I come across, just figured I could ask here as well since these forums are always really helpful.

Speculation: the default sans-serif font in Firefox on Windows is Arial. So run Notepad and change to font the Arial, non-italized. What happens? Could you type some text and paste a screenshot?

Maybe your Arial font is screwed up. Does Calibri work?

So even though my Firefox fonts are Arial, Times New Roman, and Courier New, apparently it was using Verdana for this forum.

I figured this out because I tested several font options for posting here and Verdana was the only one that was italicized, then I opened Word and noticed that Verdana was italicized in the font list. On a whim I dug up an installer package for Verdana and reinstalled the font...and that fixed it!

Sorry for the quick turnaround on this topic, I'd just been at it a while and was getting frustrated. Hopefully others who have this problem can find this thread someday.
