My wife is starting a home day-care and I was looking for a accounting solution, Open-source or cheap. Requirements are:

-Must track incoming payments and be able to provide receipts
-Must be able to provide a monthly and YTD statement
-Must be able to track spending, categorically
-Would be nice if it could accept uploaded receipts to track her costs

Anyone have any experience with GnuCash? It seems like it might do the trick, but I don't know enough to tell.

quickbooks online. free for a month then $13/mo after that. it's easy, it does most things, and everyone in the world uses it so if she wants to ask questions there will be plenty of people to help.

A second for Quickbooks. I haven't used the online version, as I needed a version for payroll, multiple users, ect. Even "Pro" is like $200, which isn't bad for the money it will save you in accounting.

A third for quickbooks. I suggest getting the non-online one because paying $13 a month is silly when you can pay $200 for pro. Plus, easy integration with turbotax.

Gnucash looks promising, you lose the turbotax tie ins, I'm sure, but if you're looking for free, that will do it.

Yes, get QB, probably better to just buy it. It's easy enough to learn and you'll want to keep good records for when you're doing your taxes.
