A Large Problem

So, basically, my x800 blew up. There was a spark and some smoke and poof, 500 dollars(three years ago) gone.

Not a big deal, except that even after I swap it with my emergency nVidia, it still won't turn on. Maybe its fucked, oh well. I've decided to take it to a professional and have him do whatever needs to be done, including installing the new x800, or something a bit better. I'm really angry and pissed and frustrated because it was so sudden but thats not the problem, I've made qualms with that and the money I'll have to spend. No big.

However I AM worried about getting some files off there before I bring it in, like my journal, a few personal photos, my music, my saved games if it turns out I need a new PC. So, I was thinking buying one of those hard drive shells that lets you plug it in with a USB just backup onto the laptop, that I'm using now. Is this a good idea? And, if it isn't, what could I do to not lose all my shit /not have some stranger see my personal stuff?

Yes. The only hitch I can think of is that USB is slow.

Qualms means you have problems with the idea, I think you mean you've "made peace with that," or "come to grips with that."

Sorry :P I'll try to be helpful to make up for correcting you.

If any data survived (and I don't see any reason why it wouldn't have short of your hard drive getting fried along with the motherboard or whatever it was), it will still be on your hard drive. So you can just take that out before you hand it to the repair guys. You could also take out the hard drive, connect it to another computer and copy the files you want to save onto a CD or another hard drive or something, then either delete them or leave them and put the drive back in your system. They might not need a drive to be in it to fix it, since the problem sounds like it's happening when you try to power it on, not after it starts and loads the BIOS and such.
