Bill to Repeal "Don't Ask, Don't Tell" Blocked by Senate
WASHINGTON – Senate Republicans have blocked legislation that would have repealed the military's policy of "don't ask, don't tell" and allowed gay troops to serve openly.
Democrats failed Thursday to cinch a procedural deal with Republicans in the waning days of the lame-duck session. The 57-40 test vote fell three votes short of the 60 needed to advance.
The vote ends months of political wrangling on the bill and makes congressional action on the repeal provision unlikely any time soon.
The 1993 law bans gay troops from publicly acknowledging their sexual orientation. A repeal provision was included in a broader defense policy bill and passed last spring in the House.
Well, this is depressing. We probably aren't going to see another bill like this in a long time.

I know in my heart this will be repealed, and that gay marriage will be legal everywhere someday. There's no way for it not to. This is stupid and shitty but just like the women's suffrage movement and the civil rights movement, with enough work and willpower and time, this'll come to pass, too.
Fucking ridiculous. Now it isn't just old man McCain blocking it, I guess.
The military upper ranks and actives aren't helping change it either.
Reports and recommendations from top brass were all in favor of repealing DADT, I thought? Defense secretary Robert Gates, Joint Chiefs Chairman Adm. Mike Mullen and Gen. Petraeus are all in favor of repeal.
Guys the Republicans have already said that they're going to block literally everything that gets presented in this lame-duck session. This is just another examples of the fact that they're assholes.

What other upper ranks are opposing it?

Oh yeah, I forgot Jesus got errata to only like white males and submissive white females. You gotta refer to the later rulings and not the original text to know that.

shitty bipartisan system, voting along party lines, etc.
that's ok, they've still got to contend with the constitutionality of the policy.
yeah but it's the queers so who cares
decent people? I'm saying there's already legal, possibly insurmountable pressure on them to end the policy. s'cool man, it's not as bad as it could be

This was so obviously motivated by nothing but spite on the part of the Republicans (the Obama admin. wanted it, after all), and antipathy towards gay people.
After that DoD report came out, which pretty much put to rest any concerns that repealing DADT would harm military readiness (the only serious argument in favor of keeping the policy, and which everyone already knew was bullshit), they don't even have that extremely thin cover to hide behind.
God, at this point they're just like "Fuck you, America. What are you going to do about it?" And nobody will call them on their shit.
