I don't know if it's a temporary holiday sale or what, but in the U.S., GameStop (along with a number of stores) have dropped the new price of the PSP Go down to $150, but GS retail stores have very quietly brought used PSP Go units down to the two-figure mark of $99, i.e., where the system likely should have been in the first place. So, following in the footsteps of that other pricey boutique handheld model that tanked beautifully—as heralded in my epic poem sequence dedicated to the Game Boy Micro,
Four Inches of Awesome—I found a used white Go in rather good condition and am trying it out to see if I want to keep it.
Note that according to CAG, this price is only at retail stores (not available at the website), so this relies on 1) Some poor fool having bought a PSP Go at full retail, 2) Said poor fool trading it in at a GameStop near you for a pittance, and 3) The Go being in good enough condition to still be usable. But given that perfect storm, at $99 the value proposition becomes much more appealing, especially given it has 16GB of onboard memory. So far, Kaz Hirai's redheaded stepchild has been pretty cool—the 8 PSN/PS1 games I bought for on my PSP-2000 look killer on the Go, the smaller, lighter form factor is badass, the analog nub feels worlds better, and being able to quick-state save any game is fantastic.
It's certainly not for everyone—the list of UMD games not on PSN is missing a number of notables, and you're obviously at the mercy of the PSN pricing lords—but my lust for sleek, small portable tech knows no limits. It makes for quite a cool companion handheld, like an iPod shuffle : iPhone kind of relationship. I know at least that RainbowDespair and maximumzero will welcome me with open arms. :rotate:
