DSiXL or 3DS

Hi,

I have a DS Phat that I have never really used (got it at launch in 2004). Recently I have been looking through the library of DS games and noticed, hey there are some pretty good games here! I still have my DS phat and it still works fine.

I have however noticed that the new DSiXL has some pretty beastly screens on it! 93% bigger in fact :) The big screen size is a real appeal. (Also the 25th anniversary bundle!)

However the 3DS is also coming out in a few months and will be backwards compatible. It also has the whole better performance factor going for it. [Although smaller screens :( ]

Basically I am tempted to buy a DSi XL but feel like I should be waiting for the 3DS.

Thoughts?

The DSiXL is cool but at this point, you should just wait for the 3DS. The giant screen of the XL is not a big deal.

Especially considering that any digital content you purchase through the DSi store will not transfer to your 3DS, I would just wait.

I bought the DSi XL in July and I do not regret it at all, but at this point, if the 3DS is so close to release, it's probably best to buy the games you want now and wait for the 3DS.

The DSiXL will still be the best way to play DS games when the 3DS comes out!

Think about it, you'll never want to get rid of it. It's always going to be brilliantly large, crisp, and until they offer a 3DSxl or whatever, you won't really have a replacement for it.

I would go for it (and have!). Been playing my red DSiXL all day. :)

You think their will be another price drop fpr Boxing Day? Or do you guys think the $180 DSi XL 25th Edition Bundle right now is about as cheap as it will get before the 3DS comes out?

In the US? Target has the DSi for $127. It's not the XL but the screen is roughly a billion times better than the original DS model. (I refuse to use the term "DS Phat")

I'm waiting for the 3DS as it's going to be a bigger leap in technology - the older games aren't going anywhere, and by the time you get through those you'll likely have some big 3D releases on the horizon.

The inability to transfer DSi Ware between hardware may have kept you from upgrading to DSi LL. But you'll have no such worry with 3DS.

Nintendo has confirmed that the 3DS will let you transfer over your DSi Ware games. It didn't provide specifics on how the transfer would take place, but this is actually one of the big features highlighted in the system's Japanese spec sheet, so it looks like they're serious about it.

The spec sheet listed two caveats. Games will have a limit to the number of times they can be transferred. Also, some games can't be moved over. The spec sheet did not say which games exactly.

Expect Nintendo to clarify these issues closer to the 3DS release time frame, which as we learned to day is not until February for Japan.

That is pretty much the least reassuring thing. Are they trying to scare people off of DSiWare? It would make a lot more sense to just say they're working on something than to come right out and say that some games won't work, without saying which ones.

Thanks for the update UncleSporky, but I tend to agree with Orogogus, as it's a little too nebulous and wishy-washy in language to be concrete at this point in time. In the end, my advice is still to not let DSiWare be too much of a selling point between a DS lite and a DSi.

I dunno, Shantae, Cave Story, Dr. Mario Express, Mighty Flip Champs, Flipnote Studio, Pictobits, Puzzle League Express, and X-Scape are all pretty compelling reasons to pick up a DSi/XL.
