I agree. Yeah, the devs made a poor choice on how to frame the teaser, but I'm not ready to give up on the series yet.
Neither am I, as I've seen no gameplay. But if the teaser is indicative of where they plan to go, I've moved my bar from 'HELLS YES SSX!' to 'wait and see'.
skate 2 is one of my all-time favorite games, and I liked 1080 on the N64 better than any of the SSX games, meaning that I'm actually looking forward to this. I wanted to like Stoked but it had too many issues for me to really enjoy it. Hopefully this will be better.
We need to compare this thread and the early Diablo III threads.
Fans are a fickle bitch.
Hey, I make no claims of objectivity; I saw news reports of rumors going around that the game was ""going back to its roots," and I took that to mean it would be in the style of its earlier games. To me, the teaser trailer—all we have to go on—exhibits very little of the style and feel of the earlier games. Once news or footage comes out to the contrary, I'll happily admit I'm wrong, but as a hype vehicle, the teaser trailer is producing large quantites of anti-hype for me.
The feeling of skating down the entire freaking 30-minute mountain in 3 was exhilarating because you had sequentially worked through the earlier races.
I got this feeling from Blur. It was neat working all the way up to the peak of the mountain and then racing downwards all the way to the bottom. You could take the wrong path and have the long descent cut short as you went onto a side level, but I though it was pretty easy to take the path you wanted.
You are playing a watered-down SSX3. Trust me on this.
Blur was the goofy younger brother who was trying too hard to be cool. 3 was a man's game, and hit everything right.
I mean think about it; all of your fun experiences were done in 3 and better. Why would you settle for a luke-warm McDonald's cheeseburger when you could have Filet Mignon?

I won't hate on the game yet.....but EA, I have my eye on you.
I hate that everything has to be gritty and for serious anymore.

I didn't say I wasn't playing a weaker version of 3, but I'm in no position to form any opinion of it and I don't care enough to take anyone's word for it.
All I wanted to say was that I got what he was talking about and that particular aspect didn't feel shoddy or disjointed at all. It's pretty awesome to descend the whole mountain.
A lot of the features that are being rumored sound pretty cool, but they could fit in any snowboarding game. A huge part of SSX was it's personality and charm and I'm going to really miss that if it's gone.

If you can find a GameCube copy of SSX 3, it's totally worth checking out if you liked Blur—it's one of the few GC discs I still have around. I'll admit that I have a completely irrational attachment to the older games, but there are a ton of little quirks about the early games that just aren't present in the more recent ones. I don't think it's entirely nostalgia talking, either, but I can't quite put my finger on what's missing from Blur.
I seem to remember that when it came out, some reviews were actually docking the GC and Xbox versions for the same reason they docked the GC and Xbox versions of Hot Pursuit 2; the framerates were so smooth that, in comparison to the PS2 one, it felt like there was no sense of speed and momentum.
Although I guess I really only have the option of playing the GC one on the Wii at the moment.

SSX 3 is not just nostalgia. I played it again just last year and loved every second of it. The only small complaint is that multiplayer kinda sucks due to the character leveling aspect.
edit: I'd never heard the complaint that it was so smooth... I'd always heard that was a good thing.
Granted, I've only played the ps2 and xbox ones. For me the controls were better on the ps2- I just prefer that controller more.

Yeah same. I rock the PS2 version, because the controller is perfect for it.
I always play 3 at this time of year without fail. Gets me in the winter/snowboard mood, and the atmosphere and phenomenal neon city lighting effects are just great.
Watching the trailer has gotten me in the mood for some SSX3. It was one of my favorite games on the OXbox. I don't mind if the aesthetic is different. As long as I'm able to pull of some crazy tricks while listening to fast music I'm fine.
Also I'm not convinced that the realism aspect will go that far. Really all the popular games that have characterized themselves as offering the best in terms of "realism" have only done so as far as the art style goes. The game play of MW and other similar games is just as cartoony as Halo or UT.
This thread, combined with the fact that it's snowing outside, is giving me the urge to go pickup the PS2 version of SSX3 from one of the 3 Gamestops at the mall.
I really don't like the way this is going. Just the title Deadly Descent seems like they are going for the more gritty atmosphere which just isn't necessary. With that said - I'd be all up for them using whatever awesome snowy mountain engine they create and turning it into Sled Storm 2011.

This still had a funky, over the top, down-with-the-man vibe going on. I remember being unimpressed with the snowboarding at the time, but I picked it up after putting many hours in with Tricky. I may not have been very fair in my judgment of the game considering that.
I wonder if that's in my OXbox collection or if I traded it in for something that was probably worse?
What worries me is that they're using real peaks and mountains. I can't imagine the crazy color palette used in previous games would be found in these real peaks. I seriously hope it won't all be white and greys.
One of my all time favorite tracks was the Hawaii track in SSX and Tricky.

I agree. Yeah, the devs made a poor choice on how to frame the teaser, but I'm not ready to give up on the series yet.
All they needed to do was have the mountain be all crisp and blue and show the scene for miles, and have the people drop out of the helicopter in all the 'Serious business' crap and then as soon as they hit the turf have it all explode off and have the "It's tricky tricky tricky tricky" soundtrack go as Eddie backflips off a cliff and fireworks go off. First to conquer a route sounds cool, but the way it's presented and then to say 'Oh, no more button holds for cool tricks, instead shitty Skate style controls" whats the point in having the ssx name.
I used to really like amped and SSX. Why are there no good snowboarding games any more

Okay, so I picked up 3 last night and I'm digging it and all. My memory of Blur is a little fuzzy, as I haven't played it in some time, but there seem to be some trade-offs. I really dig the motions in Blur for carving and flips/spins, but grabs and ubers seem to work better in 3.
I'm kind of indifferent to either game's presentation. I'm not saying either of them are bad, but I don't love either of them, so for me, it all boils down to controls and tracks. Although I would say that Blur might be a little prettier due to running at 480p instead of 480i.
And now for some random bitching. What the fuck is the point in having 3 rounds if the first 2 don't count for shit?
Edit: I get that the first 2 rounds are qualifying rounds, but I much prefer Skate's point system, which rewards the best overall performance instead of just the best performance in the final round.

So hey there's a rewind button. So now you don't even need to play well, if you screw up you can just turn back time, just like those other snowboarders do on those real life peaks you'll be boarding down.

I'm not being cynical I swear.
That's cool, I'm sure you don't have to press it. You can still be better than the others.
I'm feeling slightly more optimistic about the new SSX with these new details. I'm still not totally convinced it won't be overloaded on the grit and grime, but the rewind feature doesn't bug me (kind of cool, actually, if it's mitigated somehow). If the gameplay and actual boarding is still smooth and arcadey, I can just put on my own custom soundtrack of euro trance and play it like an HD SSX3. Will wait to see real gameplay on my own before I really judge.
Rewind doesn't bother me. I'm hoping the Deadly Descents engine will beef up these mountains it's pulling from Google Earth. Add some color, some rails, etc.

If it was really in the spirit of the earlier SSX games, Rewind would be more like this:
1) Do a really fuck-awesome trick;
2) Land it;
3) Rewind to before the jump;
4) Do a different fuck-awesome trick;
5) Land it;
6) Get points for both tricks, plus a Rewind bonus.

Ans when you're blasting down a mountain I feel there should be risk, because it's exciting knowing you may miss a spin or not land a trick if you don't execute it right.

Another fine example of SSX's charm. Impossible tricks on impossible slopes in impossible locales. All that AND catchy soundtrack.
