I sincerely doubt that they released the trailer, saw "the internet" explode with rage at it, then went away and redesigned the entire game to meet 'our' specs. I think that's crediting everybody here with far too much influence. You don't just go away and knock something like this together in a few months because of some outraged fans.

Yeah.
I've rarely seen internet bitching cause massive changes to a product already in development. Maybe a few cosmetic ones.

Probably not, but I think it can speak to how they're packaging and marketing the product. Even the way that they're backpedaling on taking the "Deadly Descents" out of the title. I wouldn't be surprised if their marketing departments shifted in the wind along with fan responses, or at least the diehard Internet message-board trawler contingent that they're trying to hook with game magazine interviews. Even the softball journalism of Game Informer acknowledges their newer marketing position:
When you guys debuted the SSX trailer at the Spike Video Game Awards it seemed like you might be moving away from the bright colors and crazy arcade feel of the early titles in favor of a more realistic tone. Is this true?
No, absolutely not. Our core statement from day one has been, “survive it, race it, trick it.” And in that, we have designed three major types of gameplay. One being Deadly Descent, which is all about survival gameplay. It’s a new addition to the franchise. But I’ve always thought racing was the core of SSX, and we didn’t want to go away from that, so we’re going to have Speed Descent events, and of course we’ll have tricks in our Tricky Descent events. We wanted to make sure we hit the over-the-top arcadey gameplay in all of these different gameplay modes. We decided to lead with the new Deadly Descent gameplay in that trailer, but all of the classic SSX style will be there, too.
At this point I'm not really going to follow it until it's out and we have reviews and actual impressions from dudes here. I admit to overreacting a bit before, and it sounds more intriguing now, but talk is cheap.

I love when they introduced the guy who is head of their marketing (public impressions or something) for the game and all of a sudden I knew why that early preview looked like it did.
Now I'm just wondering if they had always planned this stuff and the teaser trailer was just not showing all of that, or if they actually decided to change it from public outcry...
edit: *looks up* huh, I guess I'm not the only person who thought this...
They're changing direction?? This is outrageous. You can't live in the past like this. Nay, I say, take your vision and run with it, run like Sgt. Dick Glasseater runs from explosive avalanches: quickly, and downhill. Don't cave in to fan pressure! The silent majority supports these efforts to add a much needed coat of gritty gnarliness to this franchise.
There is no way that they haven't changed their direction a little bit in response to the way people viewed their trailer. They've got probabably a year or so to go on development, more than enough time to change the score structure, art style and lighting, music and whatever. The change to make it SSX isn't a huge one, but without that soul the game is nothing. Well, not nothing, I actually also really liked Amped.
To totally restore my faith, show me a picture of someone leaping into some crazy pirate ship, and have be one of the things you need to 'survive' be angry snowboarding pirate ghosts.
The one thing that makes me believe they really did change direction after the reactions to the trailer is that in the brief gameplay prototype they showed their default character was a fully geared generic dude like we saw in the trailer.
Any sense of realism was thrown out with the plastic wrap the game came in.
Unless you got it used... then there would be no plastic wrap
Agreed. Having nothing to do with realism is sort of what makes SSX great. It's why this is the only snowboarding game I've enjoyed since 1080. I want to go down crazy ridiculous courses and spin around in the air while pulling random grabs until my trick name reads as ?????. Oh and Uber Tricks are good too.
If they bring back Zoe, and if she is voiced by Bif Naked, I will be content. Everything else will fall into place.
If she is not back, then I will have to be convinced this game is worth buying. :P
I don't see why Beth (Bif) shouldn't be able to voice the part, she's recovered from the chemo and is only working on a book and another side-project-album right now. I can definitely see it happening seeing as EA is still on good terms with Mark Hildreth (DJ Atomika) and theres a pretty good chance he'd be involved with this as well.
Kinda off topic but if anyone is pining for some SSX-esque racing you should pick up Pure.
Grabbed it this weekend and although it's a quad racer the gameplay really reminds me of SSX. Huge jumps, massive vertical turn walls, trick to get bigger tricks and more boost etc., tis a lot of fun.
So is the re-branding (to just "SSX") new or have they been ditching "Deadly Descents" for awhile now? :P I know there was HUGE backlash when it was announced...
Hurrah! It looks like SSX, although, I hope I don't have to have everyone wearing proper snowboarding clothes, I liked that you could unlock knight costumes and whatever
Oh, and bring back the insane japan mountain which is like a pinball course...

Grinding down huge fallen logs and tricking off trees looks very SSX.
Also it's just called SSX now!

From the way they talk the content is still the same, they just introduced in a way that would cause less rage.
Just saying, people need to be realistic before they pat themselves on the back for being internet heroes.

My uneasiness continues to subside........
Because he is exactly that dudebro guy.
If I could get the SSX classic characters and the create-a-boarder for multiplayer, that'd be sweet.

I write about video games and stuff. It is fun. Sometimes.
From the videos and concept art around the offices it really looks just like SSX.

But none of the characters were dressed for their profession! At one point I had Mac in a gorilla mask.
Always had to have a backpack and a big coat.
If she is not back, then I will have to be convinced this game is worth buying. :P
If I remember correctly, Mac and the French troll looked normal.
Also, I'm reminded of Cool Runnings, when Sanka is bitching about their bobsledding outfits.
Nothing at all!
Nothing at all
NOTHING AT ALL!
Also any sense of realism in their clothing choices was thrown out as soon as you went to the store and purchased the cardboard snowboard.

They showed a bunch of art and screens that seemed to stress the colour and SSX-ness of it too.
