First kills boys and girls! Drinks are on me in the pilot's lounge, otherwise know as reserve underwater storage pod 4. I might have accidentally smuggled some hookers down here. (They think they are at Sea World.)
Later in the evening we will be showing a SeaLab 2021 marathon in the pilot's briefing room. (Not to be confused with the maintenance staff's colloquial name of the pod 7 latrines)
If there are any questions, like what the hell a colloquial is, see me in the Barracuda hanger. I’ll be painting my sweet kill markings on my ride.
I get a happy feeling every time someone busts this out. I still have that save somewhere, I think. Sadly, Patrick died several missions later. Blaster bomb. And of course the morale loss panics the rest of the squad. Expectable.

I'll take it under advisement. Thank you for your time. Anything else salvaged from the alien craft?
A few things.
Use your discretion.
Personally, I feel that the Sonic weapons (while seeming to be extremely effective) aren't in our best interests to research and produce at this time. Primarily due to their dependency upon a new alien substance, we've translated as "Zrbite". Whatever it is, we can't make more of it, so our only source is hunting more aliens.
Which leads me to my recommendation of heading to Gauss Tech. This should become our workhorse tech, much like the lasers they developed topside. If nothing else, we can also start selling them to warlords in third world countries for a quick cash out.
Are you advising that we sell advanced technologies to third world warlords?
Did I hear correctly?
That would be a violation, not only of international law, but of our official rules of engagement, and common ethics. I could in no way officially condone that course, and if anyone became aware of actions along those lines, I feel confident in assuming massive funding cuts at best, and more likely the termination of the entire operation.
If such activities must be conducted, I can neither condone nor acknowledge them.

It was joke sir. Mostly.
In reality we'd be selling the weapons to our sponsors for more funding, and they in turn would sell them to the warlords that they endorse. because that's politics.
I'm not advising we cut out the middleman, I'm just joking about where they'll eventually end up, no matter our intentions.
I do advise that you ease up a little, sir. We're all under a lot of stress down here, and it can only get worse.

Hey that was you? Nice one.
Poor Patrick, still the soldier might be dead, but the legend lives on.

Of course.
Apologies for the overreaction. I'd just been reviewing what little information we could recover regarding the fate of the previous expedition, and that seldom leaves me in the best temper for jokes.
We still haven't found the bodies, you know. Found the site reasonably intact, but not a single corpse, let alone survivors.
Man first mission and I apparently didnt even get off the sub. How am I supposed to die horribly or blaze my way to glory if I dont get off the sub?

Give it time Mojo. Sooner or later we all go.
If anybody needs me, I'll be swimming some laps in the sub pens. And by swimming I mean lying back on a floating chair, having a mojito.
The idea that your vote is a moral statement about you or who you vote for is some backwards ass libertarian nonsense. Your vote is about society. Vote to protect the vulnerable.

The cook keeps me fed and therefore happy.
He stays.
And given our current situation and it's early in the tour, it's allowable. Now if he made that crack 7 months from now? I'd scuttle him myself.
Of course, then you turn the tide and the joy of suicidal lobstermen with DPLs.

The best part about X-COM is it after that deceptively easy first mission, the next one is often the brutally hard night terror mission where you eventually dust off with one badly wounded trooper who barely made it back to the ship. If you're lucky.

Wasn't that part of their adaptive difficulty curve? I thought I read somewhere that the game would get harder (IE tougher aliens, meaner AI, more enemies etc...) depending on how well you're doing. This combined with the easy first mission(s?) sets you up for a horrible future raping unless you intentionally get half your crew killed in the early game.
Of course, it's been a while since I read that and I don't remember where I read it either so it's entirely possible that it's just the pressure getting to me.
Director, I recommend we show "The Abyss" on our next movie night. I know we all love to cheer for Coffey, and it'd be a great boost for waiting list morale.

Well, that is broken, really. The games are supposed to go higher in the difficulty levels, but it never worked in UFO Defense, and TFTD is just always fucking hard as shit.

Well, ladies and gentlemen, having taken the advice of the science staff under consideration, it seems we will be prioritizing Gauss technology until we have secured sufficient "Zrbite" for experimentation. Any sonic weapon research can wait until we have a halfway tolerable sidearm design in mass production.
Oh, and I am disappointed in your performance in the field combat simulations. Unfortunately, all records were lost due to human error, but, if memory serves, you were slaughtered almost to the last man, at least one trooper panicked and ran directly into enemy fire, and Zharkon managed to rotate a full one hundred and eighty degrees away from a confirmed hostile to shoot Raneados at point blank range before bothering to fire on his target.
Shameful.
We can only hope the actual field work is less disastrous.

It's good starts like these that ultimately end up with a first month base retaliation ass raping...

Science Team update: Accelerated particle research

Caulk Bite. Please tell me you didn't bring more live explosives.
Not at the moment, Commander. We've been focusing on Gauss technologies for the present, and we finally have results.
Good heft, fast firing, tolerably accurate, firepower nearly as good as a laser pistol? I'm impressed.
No need to lie, Commander. We both know the facts here.
Which would be?
It's a failure. Oh, it's fast and reliable, but the armor piercing qualities are pathetic, the raw power isn't half what sonic weaponry seems able to provide, and the clip size is far below initial projections. It's better than what it's replacing, but I could walk into a bank with it, open fire, and there would still be a fair chance of witnesses. If you excuse the example.
Vivid. But it looks solid enough as a supplement to existing equipment. We'll try to get some field tests in at first opportunity. Thank you for your time.
Frankly, the Bank Robbery Witness Quotient (BRWQ) is an incredibly important factor in any weaponry I choose to carry, and I'm glad that such things are finally being discussed.
When I get a chance to deploy, just give me a suit made from grenades. *I'll* know how and where to deploy 'em.
Something I like about the many changes XCOMutil makes is that the gauss weapons are no longer useless. They can suddenly penetrate armor, and don't need ammo anymore.

Campion: We're landed. No alphas visible, seems the landing site is clean.
Acheron Base: Acknowledged. Try to minimize damage to alien technology during recovery. We're still flying blind here.
Campion: No promises.
Acheron Base: Just stay alive.
Campion: Planning on it. Alright, let's roll out the tank.
Raneados: Whole lot of nothing so far. Think the Ghost got them all in the crash?
Mr. Mojo: Looks like it. Which means we're heading right into an ambush.

Tofystedeth: <Warning!>

Raneados: Yeah, but we got another one up north. Anyone got a clean shot at it?
[
Zarhkon: Tagged and bagged. Someone deal with the one to the east. Sounded nasty when it fired.
Zahrkon: Scratch that. Tank's handling it.
Mr. Mojo: Missed, and there's another one coming. Why am I not surprised?
Why I fear the ocean.
*distortion*
Rainfall: Shit! We got a third one confirmed. Anyone able to take the shot.
Zahrkon: Got one. Just leave it to me.
Zahrkon: Shit.
Raneados: Firing.
*explosion*
Raneados: Annnnd... missing. Please tell me the tank can cover its own ass.
*explosion*
Rainfall: Can and did. They really shouldn't cluster like that.
Campion: And here's the last one of this set. Rane, take the shot.
*explosion*
Raneados: Got 'im. We done?
Raneados: I'm guessing from the size of the craft we are nowhere near done.
Tofystedeth: <Warning!>
Raneados: GRENADE!
*explosion*
Why I fear the ocean.
Rainfall: Wow. Tank's built tough. Got this one. Alien shouldn't have given away its position like that.
Rainfall: And we're good.
Campion: Guess that wraps this one up. Send in the salvage crews. Not bad at all.
Why I fear the ocean.
Good work. Somewhat less wild firing, more unknown technology recovered, and no serious injuries.
I hope we can maintain these standards. That is all.

Right, we need more horrible deaths to punching lobsters. I vote an all drill loadout once we make it there.
