52- Good, if very standard, art. Good story with some significant plot advancement for Infinity Inc, a little tiny bit of Ralph stuff, and some cool shit on Oolong Island. A-

Blue Beetle- Wooo, Jaime gets a team-up with a New God, and the Ratlings continue to be awesome. I sincerely believe that Rogers could write an excellent book about nothing but the Ratlings and I'd buy it. Raphael A's art is very solid this issue, with only a scant few weird spots, usually with facial anatomy. Unfortunately, this issue was low on plot development, with the entire issue being dedicated to two big fights, first as Jaime confronts Lonar, and then as both attempt to dismantle the damage that Devilance the Pursuer did to the planet. Ordinarily this wouldn't be a big deal, but this book's slow enough as it is. Still, if you read it in trades it won't affect you much I guess. A

Batman: Legends of the Dark Knight- I don't usually buy this, but hey, it had Deadshot fighting Batman, written by Christos Gage, who wrote the fan-fucking-tastic Deadshot mini following Identity Crisis. This story focuses on an interesting little plot where Deadshot is hired to kill a criminal that's turned state's evidence. Naturally, Batman must stop him. But how can he use fear, his greatest weapon, against a man who doesn't even fear death? The art in this issue was great if only because of the artist's expert use of smaller panels and larger action panels that allowed for a good, long story to be told. A great little done-in-one. A

Modern Masters: Kevin Maguire- Not a comic, but I did get it from a comic shop, so it counts. I waffled back and forth over whether I should get this or not, since I could have otherwise had a nice, small week, but Maguire's one of my favorite artists, and I loved the MM: Bruce Timm book, so I couldn't pass this up. It chronicles Maguire's entire career, from his start in the comics industry, to where he is now, as recently as his stint on Superman/Batman. He also gave some great insight into the JLI/JLE/Superbuddies, and his interactions with DeMatteis and Giffen.

I also found his opinions on the death of Blue Beetle and Max Lord really interesting, basically saying that it pissed him off, and felt it negated every creative decision the team made about Max over the many years they handled him, and addressed how he redrew the final panel of ICBINTJL to show "-Max and Beetle standing side by side, laughing. Because those were our characters. Not the evil guy shooting people in the head." I found that to be an interesting contrast to Didio's take on it, where he suggested that, "Hurhur, Giffen has such a black sense of humor hurhur." He also mentioned how he'd originally planned to have Blue Beetle go into the alternate universe in ICBINTJL wearing his Black costume, and come out wearing his Blue costume, allowing for the possibility of a ressurrection, but in the end couldn't do it.

All in all, it was a really great read filled with some extremely candid, honest comments from an artist I have an immense admiration for. A+

Nah, I've learned to love the more durable, ad-free and compiled Trades than singles, and the cost is about the same. I picked up trade's #1 and 2 back to back, and had little interest in buying the issues twice by getting 13-18 in singles and then in TPB as well.
