Got a buddy who has been helpful this year and want to get him a nice gift. Since he is a World of Warcraft junkie that could be nice to get something related.
I'm asking here as I'm not a WoW player. Looking around I see Figure Prints, which is pretty much an action figure made from your very own WoW character. Anybody try this service and have any comments on whether it is good/bad and why? Don't want to drop like a $130 on this for the full size character and find out they do shitty work.
Rather than just order up a gift certificate on their site I'll probably approach him first and discuss it a bit and gauge his interest and do the order with him online. A bit impersonal and ruins the xmas surprise gift factor, but hey if he thinks the thing is stupid then it would save a hell of a bunch of cash and I could get him something else he may want.
as for his WoW playing tendencies I don't know whether he is horde or alliance or whatever, and he has something silly like 8 or more characters/classes/races, etc... leveled up to 80. So for narrowing down the gift to particulars shouldn't matter too much.
other than this was just wondering in general what other cool WoW stuff players might favor for other ideas.
There was another help thread about the same thing not too long ago, might check that as well. Blizzard sells a bunch of stuff through their store, including in-game pets and mounts, as well as plushies that also come with in-game pets.
The last time I looked at WoW figure prints, which was at least two years ago, there was a ridiculous wait time to get one. Just looked, it's a month minimum to get a print. Does this really work for your Christmas idea?
Yeah I'd say the wait of a month is not a factor. Having the physical item isn't a factor here... I'll have to work with him figuring out which of his many characters he wants done, then it looks like he gets to pick which armor and god knows how many other options. I have a feeling he'll enjoy the process of picking stuff out just as enjoyable if he is into the idea in general. and I'll start searching the forum for other WoW gift ideas
edit: found thread and marking it for any future reference
I got a figure print made up of my WoW character about a year ago and I love it. At the time it took a few months to print up and send out to me (and I'm sure the process is still just as slow), so I'm not sure if you'll be able to get one to him in time for X-mas. If he doesn't mind waiting till possibly spring to recieve his gift, I'd definitely have him be there while you're ordering it. He's going to want to put his character in the coolest gear he has, and pick out his favorite stance for his character to be created in.
If time is an issue, I think you'll have better luck with possibly getting one of the stock figure prints made, like one of the small pets. I'm just assuming, but I'd think they would have a ton of these pre-made so they'd be able to just ship it to you the moment you order it.
If the figure-print idea doesn't work out, another good WoW gift you can get him would be some sort of in-game item for his character. There are always rare loot cards up on ebay. These cards come with codes for your character to recieve an online item, things like a mount or a pet. A popular card I remember, gave you a spectral tiger mount that allowed your character to ride around on a very cool looking transparent tiger.
If all else fails, you can always just buy him a few months of WoW.
Edit: beat'd to the max

Let's look death in the face and say, "Whatever, man!"
I'd also note that FigurePrints allow for up to T10 armor sets, and from this point on I can't imagine anyone would prefer the T10 to the new T11 gear.

The T11 gear mostly looks like shit. I wouldn't rule out someone wanting a print of their character in older gear, especially since some of the very early sets are the best looking ones.

If you go this route, just buy him a new computer and save a couple hundred bucks. Though some of the loot cards that give vanity pets aren't bad, the mounts are crazy.
Somebody also mentioned the Blizzard store, a warning on the mounts from there: There were a lot of people who put a stigma on the store mounts. A lot of them were just self entitled Invincible owners who were upset that you can just buy a more recognizable reskin of the mount, but not all.
Nobody's mentioned the action figures, though. A lot of them are pretty cool if you're in to desk clutter like that. Illidan has a place of honor on my hutch next to Optimus Prime.
I'll take this opportunity to link you to www.printwarcraft.com which do custom posters and mouse pads based on people's characters. They're much more reasonably priced, around 18-30$ depending. I believe they also have gift certificates.
