[Recommend] Western-esque cinema/shows for gifting

My father loves westerns, so I'd like to get him something film-oriented for Christmas, ideally something new like a good mini series or film. He loves John Wayne stuff, if that's any help. I think he's seen that HBO series(if there was one?), but anything along those lines is awesome.

He's no fan of foreign films, unfortunately, but I'll consider it(I really want to see that myself).

Not exactly John Wayne-like, but Firefly is great western sci-fi. The complete series is only 1 season.

Is the HBO series you're talking about called Deadwood? I haven't seen it, but I've heard good things.

I guess it bears noting: if it's classic, he's probably seen it(like Unforgiven and such). Gotta think outside the box here.

Spaghetti Westerns are foreign films :/

Has he seen The Adventures of Brisco County, Jr.? Butch Cassidy and the Sundance Kid is also a classic which I guess perhaps he might not have seen, possibly.

My dad loves westerns as well. He watches the Encore Western station religiously. You can look into getting that station for him. Otherwise, see about getting recordings of classic TV Shows like Bonanza and Gunsmoke.

Appaloosa, Bury My Heart at Wounded Knee, The Assassination of Jesse James by the Coward Robert Ford, Broken Trail, and The Proposition are all more modern, what is called 'Revisionist Western' films/series. Some of them like Broken Trail (also check out Open Range) are typical of your standard western, where as some of the others blur the lines, exploring the darker side of the west.

Not really sure what you're looking for specifically.

Shame, but it is what it is.

The Proposition is a good western, Australian though. The accents are, you know, Australian, but still English.

Only downside is the audio on the DVD/Blu-ray is pretty inconsistent, so the quiet parts are barely audible and the loud parts are really loud, which makes it frustrating to watch. But it's a good movie. Cheap, too.

Django was on Netflix instant stream. I liked the anti-hero thing it was going for.
It then inspired Viva Django! which had a theme that was used in creating Gnarls Barkley's CRAZY.

Best Buy has a boxset right now which is 600 episodes of classic western tv shows on something like 40 dvds. I got it for my uncle for christmas, its like 60 or 70 dollars i think? Seems worth it if its a gift for someone whos at all interested in classic westerns.

"Pale Rider" is pretty good, and not as well-known as some of the other westerns Clint Eastwood made. He might like that. "Tombstone" is pretty good, too. I'd recommend some quirkier movies, but if your dad dislikes movies for being "too British," he probably really wouldn't like a movie as quirky (and downbeat) as "McCabe & Mrs. Miller."

Some other obvious choices (he might well have seen some or all of these): "True Grit," "The Searchers," "The Magnificent Seven," "My Darling Clementine" (if he can stand black & white)... all pretty well-known Westerns, yeah, but they're well-known for a reason.

The Proposition has already been mentioned, so I'll second it. There are accents to deal with, but they're not much.

For something that's Western-esque, and maybe he hasn't seen, The Three Burials of Melquiades Estrada was pretty boss.

He lives in Gainesville(re: other side of the state), otherwise I would. I think I'll go with some of the recommended films. The Good, The Bad, and the Weird sounds worth a risk, and 3:10 to Yuma as well.

    I made my choices.

    -The Assassination of Jesse James
-The Good, The Bad, and the Weird (he'll deal with it, it looks awesome)
    -Appaloosa (eh, it was cheap)

    Couldn't find 3:10, sadly.

Most of those films are pre-Stagecoach and are pretty bad. And not bad in a good way. The exceptions are Angel and the Badman and McClintock both of which are public domain.

    This is an excellent choice.
