I, uh, this will probably look like shameless cam whoring, but I promise it isn't.

I'm 21 years old and basically dress like I did in highschool. Plain, and ordinary and a bit too safe. Recently I started snooping around what I could do to break my habits. I came up with 2 things. First is my head and face, and next up was the rest of my body.

For part one, I basically did everything I could to change it. I've started growing a beard which is itchy as fuck but I quite like it. Got new glasses to replace my horrible frames from last year. Oh, and I got a new haircut. It's a 'messy' haircut and looks more relaxed. I am not too confident in it but at least it beats the old standby of 'load it up with gel and hope it works.'

Part two of this phase is to start dressing with intention. I typically throw on chucks, raw denim and a track suit and call it a day. I don't like having a lot of clothes so I try and make a few neat ensembles and maintain them. I'm not too worried about this phase because I can just toss out a few khakis/thermals and find neater things as I schmooze around the mall like this jacket.
IMG_0475.jpg

So uh, this is the current me, and do you guys happen to have any feedback? Should I be doing things differently? I still have 30 days to return the glasses if there is a consensus that I look like a tool or something. I guess I am just sick of looking like a 35 year old office worker.

My problem lies whenever I ask people about my glasses, new haircut, they all go, "It's okay," or "It's nice." =/

As far as phase two goes, I will probably quit going to target and khol's for clothes and start actually paying attention to how shit actually fits on me. Any neato shops to keep in mind? I've been needing a decent hoody for ages. I'm kinda tempted to shop at Express since they have some pretty nice stuff in between all the douchey things.

Anyhow, thanks in advance.

The rectangular frames go well with the oval shape of your head.

That sums up what I know about glasses.

Well looking at you you have a baby face if if you didn't grow the beard.

Like Rhesus said, the frames work.

Also, Kohls is fine for some things. Don't go broke looking for EVERYTHING designer.

Do you have any old photos to compare to?

I think you look good in your pic, but without a pic from before it's hard to make a comparison.

I like express a lot. For someone who's thin to average build, its actually difficult to find well fitting clothes in department stores sometimes. I like to buy a few nice sweaters/outerwear type things from them, and then buy my staple undershirts at like target or belks.

Express has sales like crazy, you'll have to do some puzzles to fit what you want, but don't go in there without a coupon. Get on their mailing list, the place is over priced without it. If you plan on buying jeans in there, I will say that I have had bad experiences with their cheaper jeans (plasticy feel, rip super easy and not in an appealing way), but if you buy their 90 dollar pairs on sale, they will last you a good long while.

American Eagle has some decent hoodies, but as you can tell by everything on their website looking like it was left under a bed for a few weeks, its not exactly a store for maturing your style.

If you can fit it into the budget, get 1 or 2 pairs of really nice jeans - without fancy embroidery. While many of the brand names are expensive for the name sake, some cuts actually make your rear and legs look really good. Having a go-to pair or 2 for outings where you want to make an impression goes a long way. Take your time on this, and go to multiple boutiques before you find a brand and fit that really suit you. 2 pairs of these jeans could last you 3 or 4 years, easily getting your value out of them.

Steer away from graphic tees or polos - you're trying to mature your look without going jersey-shore douchebag. I'm a big fan of Lacoste for medium-to-slender build shirts. Lots of good options. The long sleeve shirt over polo is a classic look, and displays a basic understanding of fashion (pairing and layering).

    Good luck!

Haircut looks good. You might even like going a little shorter on the sides next time, although that depends on how you style it. The glasses look good but they're not exciting or particularly "wow" which is why you're getting the "meh" look.

Plus, you're a dude. Sorry, but unless you look like someone on the Top 10 Hottest Dudes list, you will probably get pretty "meh" responses. That's not a bad thing, mind, just don't necessarily rely on the opinions of others for your look. For example, I've been rockin' a shorter hairstyle for the last 6 months or so, really liking it, but whenever I ask anyone close to me about it they say "I don't know, it looks the same like most guys." Which means they were never really paying attention — which is common for a lot of dude styles.

That said, you don't need to completely change your look -- there aren't a ton of options for guys. Personally I dislike polos, and rarely think they look good on anyone, especially compared to a fitted button-up shirt. A lot of that depends on body shape and fitness, though. You're still young so you should keep an eye on what makes dudes look *old* and not do that. For example, I think cardigans are for old guys and young guys who are trying to look like they're from the 50s, whereas non-athletic "full zip sweaters" can be worn like a cardigan but evince more of a younger "hoodie" feel (without being the ultra-casual hoodie).

But Iruka is right with Express -- for a dude who wants to look sharp and modern without busting the bank, you could certainly do worse. Gap tends to be too casual, Banana Republic is pricy (and also tends towards casual), J. Crew doesn't always have a lot of guy options (and also tends casual). A lot of mens clothing stores seem to be trending towards the "Eddie Bauer" look with a more outdoorsy feel, at least from what I'm seeing in clothing stores in my area.

Interesting; in that pic, schwimmer has done what I would suggest, grow the hair out a bit on the sides, over the ears to minimize the 'babyface' facial curves and mask the way the ears stick out a little. Basically, you want the hairstyle to create the illusion of have angular features from the top of the head down to about two-thirds of the face, where the natural curvature of the jaw will take over. It makes a much stronger presentation in terms of conventional aesthetics.

Heh, my bad guys, I knew I was forgetting something.

Before and after shots. My glasses were kinda eh and my hair was just terrible. I'm not trying to be super shallow or narcissistic here. Just trying to not look bad.

Also as far as clothes go, I have a pair of Naked and Famous weird guys (tapered leg, low rise) denim. They are pretty much a second skin to me and am looking to maybe get in another pair when the new year rolls around. I also tend to wear chucks when I am feeling casual, or leather oxfords for when I want to play dress up. Either pair goes extremely well with the jeans.

I guess I just need a more dense sweatshirt or two to hold me over winter.

Well If you're cool with sporting 150 buck jeans, then you may consider banana republic.

    What color are your chucks?

Sweatshirts are something I recommend shopping around for, and buying in person so you can feel the fabric. Its kinda a casual place, but PacSun usually has a huge selection of sweatshirts. Its easy to find plain girl ones, I dont know if you'll have much luck in there, half of the mens ones will have a giant logo on it. There are really tons of options for this, but you might want to consider some sweaters/zip sweaters.

You also may want to not wear that best buy blue with khakis.

My boyfriend has recently been doing clothes shopping on eBay, you can find some excellent deals on designer clothes that look awesome. Just make sure you know your measurements.

He also shops a lot at Express and I think everything there looks great on guys, so I'm going to third (fourth?) that vote. And recently he got some H&M stuff while in Chicago, and I loooove that stuff on him too.

As a girl, my personal clothing strategy is to have 2-3 extremely nice outfits I can wear when I need to look very good.

Your very best bet, though, is to sit a while in the Fashion thread in D&D. That place has awesome recommendations if you want to look sharp.

On your hairstyle: You definitely look a lot better without the loads of gel. Keep your hair that way. The frames look great on you; keep them.

I'm not a big fan of that jacket. It's have too many fashion trends and it's confused on what it's trying to be.

Also, be more concern about assembling a wardrobe that'll last, instead of putting together fad outfits that's going to be embarrassing to wear next season. A white button down dress shirts is a fucking versatile piece of clothing that'll never go out of trend. A silk shirt with dragon embroideries is a trendy shirt that'll last you all of the first semester in middle school.

I really like Nordstrom Rack for clothes.

Take note anytime someone says "you look like (celebrity)!" because that celebrity has spent a lot of money being told how to look as best as possible.

I kind of went through the same phase as you plus I did loose 40lbs so I had to redo my wardrobe.

    My recommendations:
    1. Looks up fashion websites from casual to fu-fu for men to get a broad taste of what you like.
    2. http://artofmanliness.com/
    3. http://forums.somethingawful.com/forumdisplay.php?forumid=179 (take with a grain of salt people here are very oomph but they offer great articles on buying fitted clothes)
    4. Finally magazine like GQ or their website to get ideas of clothes.
    5. Also measure yourself and know what clothes fit you at what size. For me Banana Republic I have to get smaller sizes cause they do the vanity sizes on clothes.

Please don't be discouraged by price but focus on fitting, styles and matching outfits.

    Second
Create an email and begin registering for clothing websites to get email promotions. I bought high-end Levis jeans for ten bucks once and got leather belt (Levis) for 3 bucks at Kohl’s. What I am trying to say is you can get name brand at good deals but have to search for it. (Also good sales does not always happen during holiday time)

    Third
Do not buy all your clothes at once. It took me two years to phase out my old fatty clothes cause you will not find everything just going once a year shopping.

    Fourth
Something I am working on but there are apps you take pics of your clothes and its like a matching inventory thing.

    Fifth
Go to the gym cause if you want to look good don't expect clothes to do it necessarily its all about attitude and confidence on how you portray yourself.

Here is my picture of before and after my weight loss just don't have any pics of my and my new wardrobe.

Express! I buy all my clothing there. Don't be afraid to get a shirt that is a little daring. The only problem with that, of course, is it can be hard to match a tie to some of the shirts.

Also, buy a few pairs of pants that aren't black/navy blue/khaki. A darker brown, a soft grey.

Wear dress shoes. You can get ridiculous deals on nice shoes if you look around some. Get a pair of brown shoes & black shoes & a black belt & a brown belt. Make sure you wear the matching belt with the matching shoe.
