I've been meaning to buy Civ 5 for a while, but only have Macs. I see that Steam has a mac version, but all other stores seem to just have the PC version. Both Futureshop and Bestbuy have it for $10 off. If I were to buy a PC hardcopy version of it and register it with Steam could I download the Mac version?
(People who order it directly off steam get access to both, I just don't know about people with hard copies.)
Steam support seems pretty terrible and doesn't have an answer, I was hoping maybe somebody here would have tried this.
Pretty sure the way it works is, because it's a Steamplay game, you buy it in any form and get a key that you can activate on Steam. That activation will give you both PC and Mac versions you can download.
Buying the PC version will not give you access to the Mac version and vice versa!
So if you do want the game then get the Mac version but be warned Civ V is very bug infected and it seems the Mac version may be even worse than the PC version (+ it's behind in receiving patches). There are all sorts of bugs with the AI, the mechanics, save-files, stability and some of the solutions made available in patches have been to limit functionality (fx. on Mac they have limited screen resolution because there is a problem with 2560x1440).
I'd advice you to read the forums at civfanatics and also the Civ V forum at 2K.
Buying the PC version will give you the Mac version; I bought the retail box for PC on day of release, it added to my Steam library, and once the Mac version became available on Steam, I was able to download that in Mac OS X. Instead of installing from the disc, all you'll need to do is download Steam, and when logged in, register the serial number provided on the back of the manual.

If so then I'm misinformed and I'm sorry. From my readings in the Civ forums my understanding was one had to buy one license for each platform. Anyway before anyone putting money into Civ V is strongly suggest reading in the forums.

I knew that it was the case that if you bought Civ V from steam you get both versions on one license, but wasn't sure about if I bought the retail version if the same held true. It turns out it does, and so I will pick up a retail copy tomorrow unless Steam adds it to their sale.
Just so you know the boxed version does not come with a printed manual and while the printed tech tree chart is nice it has been made obsolete by the patches released. So since the game is bound to Steam regardless if it's a box version or bought on Steam buying the box should only be because of the box and perhaps having to download less bytes from the net.

Yeah - I'm at my bandwidth limit for the month so I'd rather not go too far over it. Also the retail version is a bit cheaper right now than it is on steam.

Can anyone who has done this confirm please?
