Since the good ship, the S.S. Nugget, caught fire in a freak netherrack incident (I'm an idiot) I won't be making any more boathouses anytime soon. Considering a move to Lumberice though I'm never entirely sold on just building a 'house'. Must ponder.
Well the server keeps poopin on me. every 20 mins maybe, it suddenly starts to respawn blocks, not spawn ones that i just broke, and wont let me pick things up. Also it disconnects my internet until i restart my computer (ive tried to just log off my computer account and log back in, didn't work). Does anyone know why? any way i can prevent it or something? I'm playing on the server as "Bendery" for all those who didn't know...
EDIT: Just happened again, about two seconds in i started to mine away at some coal i had been doing before it crashed the last time(had to restart my comp to post this) And the error that came up when it disconnected me was: Internal exception: java.netSocketException: connection reset
So here's what I have found in various forums...

Loving the server though.
there is plenty of room here and you don't always have to build a house
you could make a tall tower, a huge multi-levelled dwelling situations entirely within a cliff-face, and many other things.
Well, I started to replace the dirt bases on the Lumber Ice plaza's trees with wood, when I realized the place is still something of a mess.
I'm considering tearing apart most of the plaza and redoing it. Replacing/Repositiong trees in a more regular spacing (its kinda haphazard right now), redo the walkways, move the fire basin and the plaza pyramid/monument thing, adding some fences and "please don't cut the trees down" signs.
Anyone mind if I do that? At the very least I'll start gathering supplies. The rough part will be the 16 Ice blocks for 1B though.
[edit] and I just thought, if we're gonna redo the plaza and prohibit felling trees, we might want to renovate the tree farm too, its haphazard and hard to work with.

Leave checksum offload enabled unless you absolutely have to disable it. (Like you tried all the above except checksum offload, then try checksum offload and find out the problem is solved).
Checksum offload lets the network card (or the components embedded in your motherboard) compute the checksum, otherwise it is done by the processor. By unchecking it you can increase the work your processor has to do significantly when its sending a lot of traffic.

I have taken my first steps into the Underdark. Armed with a stack of logs, a stack of dirt, and a handful of coal, I now need only to carve for myself a home.
I have made my (Hell) nether portal, went in, got some glow stone, got a little paranoid of something that sounded like a little kid, and promptly got out. I am shamelessly labeling my portal: Highway to Hell.
Maybe if Notch makes a world in the clouds with unique things to get I will name the portal to that: Stairway to Heaven.
Heaven: 16 blocks is just 1 block in normal space.
Sort of like a pocket-dimension.
Handy to hide a castle in a side-room of your house.
Yo Dawg, I hear you like castles, so we built a castle in yo castle so you can walk the ramparts while yo walk the ramparts!

Don't feel too bad. I think I heard that someone made a fireplace out of Wool on one of the other servers. :P
What's the etiquette on joining the server? I got the game gifted to me a few days ago and I kind of understand single player now. Or at least I know how to make torches and barricade myself in a cave.

I think the general guideline is that if you're enough of a PA forumer to be reading the thread, make a post and not be a dick, you should feel free to grab the address from the OP and hop on the server.
Edit: Be sure to read the whole underdark post and the rules at spawn once you're in game!

Bedrock is weird in the Underdark.
residents of LumberIce, I think it would be cool to have a large sign straddling the walkway as you walk from IC warpin to LumberIce, a big sign with, written in torches or redstone torches, "LumberIce"

Socket write error is the thing you're describing, and it basically means you're fucked.
Minecraft has a problem with certain Broadcom based networking chipsets. If you're unlucky enough to own one of these (like me) the game will basically be unplayable for large swathes of time. The issue seems to come and go, it'll pop up in one patch and disappear in the next, and even if you're getting the error, often just trying again the next day will make it work.
The guy who mentioned setting the Transmit Buffer value to 512 is right, that is how you fix it, but not all network adapters that are affected by this problem support setting it that high. Here's what to do;
First, update your network adapter's drivers to the latest version, Windows Update should do this fine, though it may be in the optional section, and you'll have to go there to select it. Second, right click on the My Computer shortcut in your Start menu, and open the Device Manager. You'll be presented with a big nasty tree list of hardware inside your computer, you'll want to expand the Network Adapters heading. Under that there's usually two things listed, a wireless and wired networking chipsets. Whichever one you use, right click on that, and hit properties. In the popup, go to the advanced tab. Now click on Transmit Buffers, and to the right there'll be a value, mine for example is 64. Attempt to set it to 512. If it lets you, that should fix the problem. If it doesn't, and says it won't permit a value that high, then there's nothing more you can do. Learn to live with it, I'm afraid.

Hey Vic, can I get some input on the economy?
I think you should buy wheat. I think it is on par with lumber.
Both are renewable. Crops need water, Trees don't. Both need light.
On average, four pieces of logs are created from one sapling. One wheat is produced from one crop, yet around four can be placed in the area one tree takes. So I think that cancels out.
Lumber can be used for tools and construction, but tolls can't be used when dead. Wheat saves LIVES.
I think they balance out.
Also, don't forget to start out your Minecraft day with a big ol' bowl of Wheaties.

Let's go for something better like a traversable path to the closest cave system.

I am excite
It's physical entrance is somewhere southwest of the Red Cave, I believe.
as much as i thought this would revolutionize my tree farm, it just made it more tedious to harvest
call me old fashioned but i just cram a shit ton into a tiny space
although i might do like a double decker style
more experimentation needed

Natek7 showed us you can get through 5+ layers of bedrock if you try hard enough.
