I'd absolutely be up for some UT. I played 99 for about 3 years. Assault, while pretty broken, was crazy fun in clan play. It's also hard to beat running around in DM while only using the impact hammer (and still getting the top score).
Are we talking about Unreal Tornament GOTY? Always been tempted to pick that up
Like someone said earlier, an unreal pack is on sale on steam and just UT99 GOTY is on sale on gog.com, so now would be the time to pick it up. I went ahead and bought the gog version. I'm like you. I've been wanting to pick it up for a long time, and I figured why wait any longer?
Also, I'm excited to see so many people interested in playing. I expected this thread to be on page 3 or 4 with no responses by now. I'm totally psyched to get some games going.
edit: For anyone who needs a copy, here it is on gog.com. On sale right now for 6.49.
We'll post server info and times in this thread too, so joining it won't be required or anything. I'm also down for using it to arrange any old school fps fun. So if you guys want to do 2004 or even Quake after we get some UT99 in, I'm down.
edit 3: I don't have to work today and school doesn't start for another week which explains all these updates. Anyway, I'm looking for potential servers for us to play on. For now, I'm just trying to find a normal, vanilla server for us to get started on. Because modern games have made me soft, and now I suck at the older ones. I'm a little out of practice, so hopefully we can all suck together. Here's a server I found that might work out for us for now. The ip is 85.236.100.244:8077 Hop in there and tell me what you guys think. If anyone else wants to find some other servers or better ones for us, then go for it. We also need to arrange a time to meet, so I'm open for suggestions. Looking forward to playing with you guys.

So UT99 is back to 9.99 on steam, but it's still 6.49 on gog.com if you still need a copy. Again, today is the last day. Then it'll be 9.99 on gog.com too.
There are still some servers out there that get people on them. But, it will depend on the time of day/night. Many players are west coast players and do not start playing until late evening for them, much less the rest of the country.
I play CTF. My favorite server is "The Realm", located at 8.9.36.186. It has a lot of cheat protections, so be ready to download for a little while. Another server that did have a good sized group showing up before Christmas is "unlimited's CTF & DM" located at 64.79.143.72. But, it does have some known cheaters that play there sometimes (one is on there as I type this).
Keep in mind, especially if you are new to UT99, that many of the people you go up against have 10 years experience under there belts. It can be difficult to discriminate between them and the cheaters. Don't let it deter you.
I hope to see some new blood, or get some old blood back on again, soon.

It's crazy to think that anyone would have fun cheating on any game, but a game that is 10 years old? You'd think someone who cheats at games wouldn't stick around. I guess I don't know cheaters that well, but I would have assumed they'd just keep moving on to the next big thing so they can show everyone how "awesome" they are.
edit: I just tried the realm. It would be a good choice too. It was empty when I was in there, though.
edit 2: I just had a ton of fun in this one. unreal://84.234.23.71:6666

Insta-gib Being outside of America makes it that much harder to play against experienced players.
The Realm does not have a lot of people on it nightly anymore. But usually people meet there on Friday Nights for a weekly game night.
One thing I forgot to mention, if you find a server that you like the mods they use, and the people that you play with there, don't sit around watching to see if someone is play on it. Sometimes there are several people wanting to play on it but not wanting to play alone or against bots. So they watch it and get on when someone else does. Personally, I do not like playing bots. So I will have a server query tool open while I am doing other things online. If I see someone get on a server that I like, I will join also.
http://phanz.com/ has a server query tool that works with UT99, UT2003, and UT2004. Put your favorite servers on it, even some of your favorite players, and you can see who is playing where, the scores, etc. One click will open your UT and take you to the server to begin play. You can also use it to change your name or chose a team before joining. For UT99, I prefer UTM8 v2. But either works.

That's what we need to come up with here. A night when we can meet maybe weekly or so and just play. I'm assuming Friday or Saturday nights would work best for us because of school and work. How about we make it Friday night for now and you guys can throw out some times that work best for you and we'll decide from there. Everyone just post a time that works best for you. Include time zone or location too.

Anyone can host there own server. Just start the game go to the multiplayer menu -> start new multiplayer game -> look at the bottom right of the new menu for a 'dedicated' button.
This will close the game and start a dedicated multiplayer server!
Personally I vote someone run a plain-jane 25 kills deathmatch server will normal weapons, maybe translocator, and cycle small to medium original pack maps.
If someone is cool with hosting this please message me cause there are one or two custom maps out there i would really love to get put into the rotation. The first of which is a map inspired by M.C. Escher drawings that completely fucks with reality and dimensions.

I'd do it. I didn't know it was that easy, though. So then what's the point of sites like gameservers where you pay to rent a server to use and stuff?

Updated OP. I really want to play some games this Friday night, guys. Let's make this work. Suggest some times that would work best for you, and if Friday doesn't work for a lot of you, then we'll move it to Saturday or whatever we need to do.

They keep the server running day and night, while an individually hosted server goes down when you turn off your pc. Also, one person doesn't have zero ping.

Ah, I see. And having 0 ping gives you an advantage, right?
Ok, well I could try to host a server this Friday night, unless someone else wants to do it. I've been playing a little bit and I'm horrible at this game again, so I don't think it'd help me much.
It can be easy to host. But, there are many options. Cheat Protection, MapVote, etc., 100 speed, or faster. Most seem to run 125 speed, I think. You may or may not get good results with hosting through a home connection, regardless of your connection speed. Even though this game was meant to run on dial-up, lag still plays a role. A down side of hosting your own server is that if you do want to include any maps or mods not standard with the version of UT you have, everyone will have to download them. That will put quite a drag on the resources. Good online servers will have a redirect. This allows these things to be downloaded from another location, thus not affecting the quality of the server and game play.
There is another option, since you have several people wanting to play, and are agreeing through this thread to meet there. You can find a server that is already up and running. There are still several out there. Most are not occupied, but if you bring your own group, you do not need one that is. Of course, at least one of you will need to find a server ahead of time, and everyone just give it a try. Better yet, find 2 or 3 servers that seem alright, announce them ahead of time, and everyone connect to them ahead of time to get any downloads before game time.

I'm not really worried about cheat protection, map vote, etc. since we're just playing with other PA guys. I think we want vanilla UT too since most of us haven't played for awhile, so a quick server wouldn't be a problem. Default maps are also fine for now too. On the other hand, you're right and a lot of servers are open for us to use. I guess I don't care either way. If someone wants to make a server or find us a couple, then that'd be awesome.
I can't play this Friday because my wife wants me to do social things with people in "real life". But I'll be down for next weekend.
Well Friday was just an idea. I haven't really got any feedback from a lot of the guys who said they were interested, so would Sat. night work better for you?
my schedule is wack and im in China but I'll try to make regular friday or saturday games as often as possible.
I used to host dedicated servers and play on friend's dedicated servers back in the day. The latency is a non-issue for hosting your own server; don't even think about it.
I personally suggest someone host our own server with a PA name to it without a bunch of excess installer crap because none of us are going to cheat and we can just stick to the default maps plus maybe a couple of customs.
I wish i could do this myself as i leave my pc on all the time anyway (used to host a minecraft server for 6 months or more) and the resources that a server takes up are tiny.
How about for starters we just run a pure deck16 server to 25 kills? If i see anyone on i'll jump in and frag the night away. Deck16 is good for 2 - 16 players.
I don't mind at all that i'll have lag to America.

How about PA DEATHMATCH? I'll start it up. I'm guessing it'll be showing up under deathmatch.
edit: it's up. I'll watch to see if anyone hops on. I selected the box that said advertise server, because I'm assuming it won't show up in the list without that?
edit 2: Ok, it's showing up under LAN servers. Did I do something wrong?
Unfortunately i have to go learn Chinese, then work for a few hours so i can't try any more now

Ok I'm taking initiative and setting this game night up for Friday night 7:00 PM EST. We'll figure out what server and stuff like that later. OP updated.
I don't foresee anything keeping me from playing then, so count me in.
EDIT: It might be worth mentioning that the UT community took up the task of updating the game, but seems to have since stopped. The latest version of the game is 451b, which is compatible with all previous versions of the game. You can grab the update here.
Does the community patch work with the steam version?
That's a good question. I'm assuming most of us are playing our old cd copies. I've since lost mine and am using the gog version, so I could update it. Steam, however, might not be as easy. If there's no easy way to update the steam version then we'll just use the last official patch. I want everyone who wants to play to be able to.
edit: Also, if anyone has time today or tomorrow and wants to set us up a server or find a couple good ones, preferably without mods or user maps, then that'd be awesome. I've got a couple in mind, but we could use some backups or better ones if you find them.
My roommates and I used to play assault all the time, loved playing this game. I'll try to hop on for a bit Friday night. I'm hoping to find my copy of the game somewhere, but if not I'll just grab it on steam.

Don't forget, gog.com has it too. Either way it's the same amount, though. Hope to see you there Friday night. Don't forget to check back here Thursday night for server details and stuff like that. It'll be in the instructions in the OP.
I might be down. I mean, depending whether or not I'll be playing with arthritic old men who are more my skill level or cyborg teen Asians who will head shot me across the map as soon as I hop out from behind a wall.

Ok, patched my game. It was super easy, so make you guys do that before tomorrow. I'm posting the server later today that we'll meet in in the OP and on the steam page as well as a back up server should the first not work out, so make sure to add it your favorites. Finally make sure you put [PA] in front of your name so we know where you came from. Looking forward to playing with you guys tomorrow night.

Ok guys. I posted the server info in the OP. We will be meeting in unreal://64.237.39.216:7777. It's a DM server that seems pretty basic. I didn't have to download anything extra and it looks like it rotates between Deck 16 and Liandri. Go ahead and check it out today if you want. Don't forget to download the patch in the OP and to add [PA] in front of your name. I'll post a backup server later, but it shouldn't be a problem.
