I really like UT99 as well as 2004, but I'm not too big on 3. Maybe it has something to do with coming out after Gears of War. Which, don't get me wrong, is an awesome game too, but I just feel like it influenced it somehow. And they're two completely different games. They should stay that way.
I like 3 well enough, it feels different than 2K4 but I'm pretty happy with either. I usually think of 3 as a glorified tech demo for the Unreal engine than a game. Still fun though, and pretty to look at.
UT3 does play a lot like UT1 with vehicles though, in my opinion. It's main problems at this point is really just that the mod community is a touch slow.
It's main problem is the vehicles. They should never have been in a twitch FPS game. And the fact that the weapons had to be balanced for them as well fucked up the balance for true skill games like CTF and DM.
I'm glad Epic moved to gears of war. They destroyed UT when they put in vehicles, RIP what was once a good DM/CTF game, and way to fuck the dog epic.
I was just on the server and it had a 1v1 DM map going. Hopefully that won't cycle when we get a group together, but it may not hurt to have a backup just in case.
Huh? DM and CTF play fine still. The weapons haven't been adjusted too much against humans. The vehicles are balanced and kept destroyable because they have pretty low armor, and the AVRiL and other vehicles. I mean, the strongest armored vehicle, the Nemesis, only have 1000ish armor and dies pretty good to the Stinger.
In DM, it's about the same as always, rockets killing decently, goop gun and flak instantly killing shit if you an aim well/get close enough, minigun doing good over ranges.
Yes, the bots. When the absolute lowest difficulty of bots are capable of sniping people with normal (not zoom) instagib rifles across the map on Facing Worlds in two shots (one to bracket, one to kill) there is something wrong there.
Yes, I realize that HEY IT'S FUCKING FACING WORLDS but I've been playing since UT99 and I can't pull that off on targets that distant.
Especially not targets working together to do low-grav instagib slingshot jumps and are currently travelling at around Mach 2.
EDIT: The bots also didn't seem smart, they just seemed like they had their accuracy sliders bumped up a shitton.

You can always push Escape, Map Voting and pick something better suited.

Yes, the bots suck ass and are shittly programmed for instagib gametypes, and my god, don't get me started on the campaign bots.
Against humans, the problem is fine though
Well, you have to remember the UT2k4 is basically a huge expansion pack. It takes all of the content from UT2k3 + new stuff made by Epic and DE + vehicles and ONS mode from another company + 4 official Epic Bonus Packs + ECE pack + random maps.
So I went through all the work to get UT2004 up and running on my Mac and I suck horribly at it. People kill me when they're halfway across the map. I'm not sure it's worth my time playing it.

I suck pretty bad too. I did better at 99.
Anyone have any ideas for next Friday night's game? I know some people wanted to play Quake.
No, it totally works with the Quake 2 demo, so they're basically distributing that with in an .exe with Action Quake 2, so it's an install-and-go kinda thing.
Pro-tip: It is awesome. Still.

Oh, wow. I didn't know that. I need to try this out soon.
The turn out was a bit thin Friday. I arrived in the server a little past 7 and after a half hour of my asshole being ripped open by goo-mex I had about enough. Maybe more people arrived later. Fun game though. Like it much better than 99.

The only reason I had problems was because of my shitty ping. When there's a half-second gap between firing a hitscan weapon and the shot actually registering, what's the point?
Is it anything like Action Half-Life? I remember loving that mod.
Yes, Action Half-life is basically an attempted continuation of AQ2 (by a different team, if memory serves), but it lacked a lot of the superfast gameplay and some charm that made the original amazing. For people who don't know, it's basically proto-Counterstrike. You pick a weapon at the start of the match and kill the other team. Most shots that connect will kill you, but if not you might die of bloodloss unless you bandage the wound. Basically, a whole ton of stuff that they innovated in that team is still used today, but there's a certain weight to AQ2 that still sets it apart.
So, a sort of realistic damage-taking mechanic, but at Quake speed.
Ok, I don't know if it's the servers I played on or what, but Action Quake 2 is kinda off. It takes a second of me holding down the mouse for my gun to fire, and everyone seems to be great at pulling off awesome sniper headshots while jumping around, and I can't hit anything while crouching and aiming carefully

I think someone just can't drive well.

For a 2004 non mmo it seems huge as fuck. So many goddamn maps. I kind of feel half the skill in these games is knowing where shit is.
Basically everything on this page is a must-download if your UT2k4 of choice doesn't have it already.
