Windows 7 desktop issues - My icons are gone! [Fixed]
It's nice and it's big but, importantly, it's empty. It's not supposed to be empty. There should be icons there. I keep "current" projects on my desktop - folders, screenplays, that sort of thing. THey're not there anymore.
They're supposed to be there, of course. And when I use Explorer to go to the desktop, I see this:
So what's happened? Why isn't this stuff displaying on my desktop anymore?
Er, you appear to be using some kind of custom front end to make it look like OSX... It might be helpful to know what software you're using there.

Incidentally right-clicking still displays the appropriate right-click menu, giving me "View", "Sort by", "New", and so on. I created a new folder and it didn't appear on the desktop, but it did appear in "Desktop" within Explorer.
Well, poking around Stardock's website shows me that hiding desktop icons is one of the things objectdock can do. I'd really start there to look for your problem. I found this for what might just be a quick fix. If that doesn't fix it I'd hit up their forums.

That's something DesktopX can do, but I'm not using DesktopX. And, as I said, disabling ObjectDock Plus 2 doesn't fix the problem.
Most other reports I've found concerning this issue blame a recent Windows 7 update, and recommend I do a System Restore. Which is odd because I haven't received any updates in the last day, which is when this problem first popped up.
Er, you didn't say the problem persisted while objectdock was disabled...
Did you try doing a system restore?
Personally, my money is still on objectdock somehow doing it. I'd kill all it's startup services in msconfig and try rebooting if you haven't done that yet.

My apologies - I've been talking to a few people about this, thought I'd mentioned it here and obviously hadn't.
Killing ObjectDock has had no effect. Killing it, uninstalling it, all do nothing. There aren't any other msconfig services or startup apps causing the problem either. Looks like I'm going to have to try a System Restore.
Good news! System Restore didn't do anything, and literally killing every single third-party program at start-up has absolutely zero effect whatsoever. Stripping Windows 7 back to virtually nothing does virtually nothing.
Well now you're officially out of my league... Sorry. Good luck I guess.

Incidentally, I know that this probably won't interest you, but I'd hate myself for the rest of my life if I didn't at least suggest it; If you're interested I'll be in my quarters at lunchtime, covered in maple syrup.

Which is nice.

...Problem solved.
