Searching has been disabled

Firefox:
1) Go to google.com and right click on the search box. Select "Add a keyword for this search"
2) Name the search whatever you like (e.g. Penny Arcade Forums) and add a keyword like pa, paf, whatever.
3) Find the newly-added bookmark in your Bookmarks menu or toolbar (depending on where you saved it), then right click on it and select Properties.
4) Copy and paste this link into the Location field, then click OK.
To use, just type your keyword (pa in my case) into Firefox's address bar followed by your search term.

I don't know how to make it reliably show up. Sometimes the forum will collapse the link text, sometimes it doesn't from edit to edit. Sometimes it'll put that %3A in place of the colon, some times it does not. Has something to do with whatever 'optimizes' the posts I think.
edit: okay I think I got it to stick that time

So, uh...what happened? I mean like, why? Reduce server load or something?
I doubt it'll come back until/unless they think the servers can handle the load.
alphamonkey talked about setting up replication in another thread, which might be what makes that possible.
End on
I wish that someway, somehow, that I could save every one of us

It might just be cheaper for them to consider getting a Google Site Search account and integrating that in the forums. I've used it before in two other projects to great effect.
Maybe server load wouldn't be a problem if you didn't have so many hats.
Blasphemous!
But, yeah, string matching and searching is one of those computer science problems that there isn't really a great solution for. And with the huge amount of history these forums have, it's going to be a huge resource hog.

It should be able to come up at least by the time the forum restructure / upgrade happens. That was time-tabled to be finished by next month right?

I'm getting a different message now when I go to the search page. It's now saying:
Triple B, you do not have permission to access this page. This could be due to one of several reasons:
1. Your user account may not have sufficient privileges to access this page. Are you trying to edit someone else's post, access administrative features or some other privileged system?
2. If you are trying to post, the administrator may have disabled your account, or it may be awaiting activation.
Is this anything of note, or can I continue to ignore it?
Can't say I'm surprised by this. Searching seemed to be the most consistently fucked feature on an otherwise awesome forum.
Were this on nearly any other forum I visit, I'd probably be pissed, but if you guys agree think this is the best thing to do, I'm sure we can make do without it until it's up to par.

Your way still seemed to give me trouble, but if you type
I wonder if it would be possible to at least bring back user searches. That'd be much easier to index, right, since it wouldn't have to touch the text at all?

You lie!
Or perhaps it went down the memory hole.
Which means that ironically nobody will be able to search for anything?

that's why we call it the struggle, you're supposed to sweat
So, for example, if I wanted to find FyreWulff's quicksearch instructions in this thread, the query would look like this:
Quicksearch site:forums.penny-arcade.com inurl:134347
http://www.google.com/search?q=Quicksearch+site%3Aforums.penny-arcade.com+inurl%3A134347
Remember that pages aren't immediately indexed, though. So you won't get results for the most recent pages of threads a lot of the time.
Pretty much this.
