I have a virtual midi keyboard program that is currently installed on my computer, but if I get a midi keyboard and use the program with the keyboard as an interface, plugged into the computer, where can I record the sounds to? Audacity, or do I need to get like a music studio program.
Thanks
the way this usually works is you've got the keyboard which you use to send midi impulses to your computer, where a software instrument turns them into sounds of your choosing. so you'll need a midi interface as well as the keyboard. from there, you'll need a vst host/DAW like reaper.
Amazon sells a USB/MIDI interface for $5.70. I use one from M-Audio that cost more like $20 or $30, but I don't think there's any reason this one shouldn't work.
For software I use Anvil Studio, which is pretty free and composes in staff notation, if that's what you want.

Be careful with USB-MIDI interfaces if you're using a newer OS, though. Many devices still don't ship with Win7/64-bit compatible drivers (the M-Audio I bought less than a week ago didn't), which means that you're at the mercy of the company to have actually created updated drivers and hosted them somewhere. The M-Audio above has updated drivers on their site, but YMMV - check before you buy.
