I just found this unfortunate piece of information in my motherboard's manual, after being warned at start up (This is a new PC) that "This motherboard does not support your CPU". It starts, boots into Windows etc, but I looked in the manual and found that while it does support AM3 socket processors, it only does so up to 95w.
It's an Asus M4A78LT-M LE, and an AMD Phenom II X4 955 Black Edition processor.
The specs list the Phenom II X4 as being compatible, but it might well mean less power hungry processors now that I know about this power limit.
I suppose there's no way I can just ignore this? I'll have to buy a new motherboard?
you'll be just fine running it, but you will be under-clocking the cpu (check what your bios or windows says your running at, and compare to the specs of the cpu)
your also not going to be able to over-clock it all which is the whole purpose of a black ed chip as they have unlocked clock multiplier
so your probably better off just returning it and getting a lower model cpu, or buying a different motherboard.

They make 95w Phenom II X4s. Just have to find one or swap the motherboard for one that supports the chip you have.
