So a friend wants to go see Smoking Aces....I've heard nothing but bad things about it.
I am interested in Pan's Labyrinth.
Is it any good
Is it a "horror" movie or more of a thriller with a good story?(I really don't like horror movies...the stories usually suck balls and the idea of paying someone just to scare the crap out of me is not appealing)
If you dislike blood, or realistic violence you'll just have to close your eyes for a few scenes. The movie is fantastic, and more than makes up for the bits of violence it throws in to advance the story and to develop some characters.

Pan's Labyrinth is a social commentary that uses fairy tales and Franco's fascism during the Spanish civil war as an allegory to contemporary politics. It's definitely not a brain-dead slasher flick.
I would kick Jeremy Piven and Ryan Reynolds in their respective dicks for reasons entirely unrelated to Smokin' Aces, but if Smokin' Aces is a good excuse for dick kicking, I will add it to the list.
I agree with above opinions on Pan's Labyrinth. Although I took it more as a coming of age store stuck in the middle of the Spanish Civil War. A lot of terrible things are happening in this little girl's life and to me, the movie was how she used her imagination to help herself cope with reality. There are a many other equally valid ways to interpret it though. As far as genre, I'd say war drama with a bit of fantasy thrown in.
Was one of my favorite movies of last year though (I first saw it last December I think).
I just want to say, Smoking Aces is OMG awesome! I mean it's probably a really awful film, but I couldn't tell from all the awesome on screen. Seriously, as a film you really can't predict what is going to happen next in the same vein as Running Scared and as such I found it to be a very worthwhile film to go and see.
Pan's Labyrinth is neither horror, nor really thriller. It's 30 minutes of an adult version of the labyrinth inter cut with probably the most predictable spanish civil war story possible. It certainly isn't a bad film, the acting and the fx are great.

I'm going to see Smoking Aces tonight with some people (the movie choice isn't my call). Was pretty terrified over the reviews further up, but it's good to see not everyone hated it.
Pan's Labyrinth is indeed subtitled, and I really enjoyed it. Not my movie of the year or anything, but definitely enjoyable.

Overall, recomended?
I recommend it. It's a pretty wonderful film, but what you see in the commercial is ALL the fantasy in the film. You're looking at about seventeen minutes of fantasy -- the rest is social commentary and historical fiction based around a young girl, her cruel adoptive father and their rebel maid.
But the seventeen minutes you do get will stick in your mind.
I look forward to a Del Toro film that is a more dedicated fantasy film as that's where my tastes invariably gravitate towards.
-It is subtitled.
-It is good.
-It is a smart movie and not just a slasher.
-But it depicts a few acts of extremely realistic violence.
-The fantasy is what the child sees since she loves fantasy and is trying to escape the horrible things going on around her, it is not just randomly done in it actual serves some purposes in the movie for plot.
It is definately a good movie to see with people and then talk over later I think, an artsy war drama/thriller with alot going on.
Also dont read the other Pan's Labyrinth thread on PA because it has many spoilers and if you are like me you are too tempted to read them.

However, it is neither thriller nor horror. It is historical drama (time setting is the Spanish civil war) mixed with dark fantasy.
There are no scary scenes, but a few of the scenes depict fairly grim violence and I was on the edge of my seat maybe once.
