Recommend me a new graphics card

Found out my graphics card I bought used from a friend gave up the ghost today. That said, I'd like to see what you all have to say on the matter for buying a replacement.

Basically, a good graphics card is very important to me being a 3D artist and one who plays PC games online. I run Windows 7 64-bit with an AMD Phenom 8450 Triple-Core Processor 2.10 GHz and 4 GB of RAM installed. It's a custom-kit tower but has all the working bits for running a good PC. (Let me know if you need anymore information on this front.)

My previous graphics card was an Nvidia GeForce 8800 GTS OC. I'd like to get every bit of performance I had from the old one and possibly better. It was an older model so I'm tempted to buy an 9800 from the series, but if there are any other good options, love to hear them.

    Assuming your case is big enough and you have a sufficient power supply, a Radeon 6850 or 6870 is probably your best bet. look for a highly reviewed one from a good manufacturer (HIS, XFX, Sapphire).
